    Leadership Highlight
    Emmanuel Rivera, Professional SHPE Member

A candid interview with Emmanuel Rivera, Professional SHPE Member, former Industry Partnership Council Chair and Manager of Employee Resource Groups at John Deere.

What has been your most memorable moment as a SHPE member?

Hard to single out one specific moment for me as SHPE has allowed me to grow tremendously both personally and professionally.  Specific to my role as the IPC Chair, getting the opportunity to address the audience at the SHPE Star Awards Ceremony and represent all members of the Industrial Partnership Council (IPC) as well as my own company is one memory that I’ll always take with me.  If we include my role within John Deere’s SHPE Professional Organization, I am proud of our team’s accomplishments in receiving the “John Deere Inspire Teamwork Award”, an enterprise wide recognition awarded to teams that exemplify overall excellence in successfully supporting an innovative inspiring event and programs such as "Noche de Ciencias", a program that continues to impact students' interest and achievement in STEM education and careers across many of our communities.

How do you feel SHPE helped you advance as a professional that is Latino?

SHPE has gifted me with the connections and relationships I’ve had the opportunity to shape and form not only within the John Deere walls but across many other companies and networks.  It has broadened my thinking on what’s possible.  SHPE has allowed me to see that our contributions as professional members do not stop as we come to and from work but rather continue as we seek opportunities to help those in our communities who need it the most; the children; our next generation of leaders.

Can you tell us how your role as an IPC point of contact and as the IPC Chair support the case at John Deere for investing in SHPE and overall diversity?

What a pleasure to have served as the IPC Chair over this last year! SHPE opens the doors to talent, to professional networks, to opportunities that support the communities in which we are a part off, to growth and development. IPC’s work to advance Diversity & Inclusion efforts both through talent recruitment and development.  The IPC also steps in to provide guidance and recommendations on how to strategically support those at the national level. Proud to work for a company that is in full support of continuing to advance all aspects of D&I.

Why do you think diversity in STEM is important?

Diversity is at the heart of everything we do.  I happen to be part of John Deere’s Diversity & Inclusion team but as I often get the opportunity to work with others across the organization, my message is simple and consistent: diversity is everyone’s responsibility regardless of job title.  Incredibly important to recognize that STEM related careers currently play and will continue to play a key role in our talent, employee, and business needs.

      Accessing Higher Education:

      Tuition-Free University Programs

Written by: SHPE National Graduate Committee (NGC)

Many in our LatinX community must forgo higher education due to the substantial obstacle that is college tuition. The high and increasing costs of tuition can make students drop out of their bachelor and graduate degree programs or unable to pursue them all together because of the financial burden placed on their families, the stress of working during school, and the weight of financial loans (1,2). These are obstacles that can persist through many generations affecting how many of us see education in the US and limiting the socio-economic uplift of the LatinX community.

Recent changes in tuition policies in some top engineering institutions are “making the impossible, possible” by offering free tuition to lower income households. In Region 4, the New York public university and college systems (e.g., SUNY and CUNY) are tuition free for in-state households earning less than $125k/yr via the “Excelsior Scholarship” (3). In Region 6, The University of Michigan, ranked 5th best engineering school by US News, through its “Go Blue Guarantee” will be tuition-free for in-state households earning less than $65k/yr (4). In all Regions there are graduate PhD programs in engineering that are fully-funded and offer liveable stipends and benefits.

Though there are more costs associated with college aside from tuition, tuition comprises the biggest financial obstacle. Supplementary scholarships like the ones offered through SHPE and HSF can help pay for those additional educational costs (5,6). Learn more about opportunities such as these and raise awareness within your LatinX community including SHPE Junior chapters, Pre-College students, and those wishing to return to school. These changes will hopefully mark an increase of LatinX student college enrollment and persistence, allowing students to realize their fullest potential and become leaders in STEM and beyond.
