We're More Than Just Fancy Dinner

Houmas House Introduces Elegant Tea, Breakfast and More

The Carriage House, Houmas House's newest restaurant, redefines the luxury dining experience, combining intimacy and comfort in a breathtaking relaxed club environment with personalized service and attention to detail.

With continuous culinary offerings throughout the day (breakfast, light snacks, hors d'oeuvres, beverages and sweets), The Carriage House along with the Turtle Bar will host Breakfast, Afternoon Tea and casual Evening Dining.

Stay all day and enjoy the lush gardens, ponds, fountains and statuary all set in the shadows of the majestic ancient moss draped oaks surrounding the famed colonial - revival mansion of Houmas.

John Burnside, an Irish immigrant, purchased the Houmas from the estate of Wade Hampton in 1858 for $1,000,000.   The Houmas was the largest sugar plantation in America. The following year, John Burnside purchased the famed Garden District villa of James Robb for $55,000.   The villa became known as Burnside Place. Mr. Burnside owned 10 of the most valuable plantations in Louisiana and became known as the Sugar Prince of Louisiana and his Houmas became The Sugar Palace.

James Gallier, famed Irish architect of New Orleans, designed a pair of carriage houses for Mr. Burnside in 1860.   The Gallier designs were not built, but the original designs survived in the archives of New Orleans.   Over 150 years later, the Gallier faade is finally constructed at Houmas.

The great pair of 1850's New Orleans gilt mirrors sit atop the carved marble mantles, reflecting the Irish appointments of the Ballroom. The crystal chandeliers hanging from the plaster medallions highlight the intimate seating and dining arrangements giving the room a formal but relaxing ambiance. The Carriage House and Turtle Bar redefines the luxury dining experience, combining intimacy and comfort in a breathtaking relaxed club environment with personalized service and attention to detail.

Welcome to the Sugar Baron's Cinema
 As Seen By Princess Grace

Grace ready for the movie
For decades the drive-in movie became an icon of American culture and a weekend destination for all ages. With the growth of cinemas, movie rentals and streaming videos, these outdoor theaters have become merely a memory...until now.
Houmas House is reintroducing the concept of an outdoor cinema on our front lawn. For a mere $10.00 per adult I invite you to bring a blanket or your favorite lawn chair and come enjoy some of the greatest classics with me. The opening date of Friday, October 18 will feature The Great Gatsby starring Robert Redford.  Future dates and titles will be announced on our Facebook page and our website.
Will you join me for a magical night under the oaks?

Love,
Princess Grace
