Research and Assessment: Kudos to Danielle Molina and her research and assessment committee for ensuring we were able to capture useful feedback from the annual conference including room usage data. If you are interested in volunteering for this committee, please contact Danielle.

We look forward to connecting with you soon!

Did you know?

Some Information about where we came from!
  • SACSA was originally known as the Southern College Personnel Association
  • Most of us know that SACSA was founded from a idea held by Stanley Jones. In 1950, Stanley had an idea. He immediately put this idea into action by sending 50 postcards to personnel workers in the Southern states. In March, recipients of those cards meet in Atlantic City, officially starting the Southern College Personnel Association. What many might no know is that Stanley Jones was a graduate student!
  • The inaugural conference of SCPA was held at Vanderbilt, with 72 attendees. Six of the first seven conferences were held on campuses.
  • At the 1964 conference in Atlanta, discussions began toward dedicating a specific portion of the conference program to research. And from 1967-1971, a Research Symposium was held at the annual conference.
More History to come in future SACSAlerts!

Josh McKee
SACSA Members Highlight

Josh McKee
Assistant Director of Career Engagement
Doctoral Candidate, College Student Personnel Program
University of Louisville

Josh joined SACSA in 2014, when an advisor in his Master's program at Clemson University encouraged him to join the Awards and Recognition committee and present at the SACSA Conference hosted in Louisville, KY. He enjoyed his SACSA experience so much that he later became the conference communication chair for the Jacksonville, FL site.

Josh currently volunteers as the SACSA website chair and co-chair of non-conference programming. He credits SACSA with helping him develop professionally by connecting him to members across the region. His professional aspirations include someday becoming a vice president for Student Affairs.

He is a doctoral candidate at the University of Louisville in the School of Education's College Student Personnel Program. His research interest include looking at retention efforts for transfer students at 2 and 4 year institutions.

When asked what is the greatest benefit of his SACSA membership, Josh says he appreciates the generalist nature of the organization. You can tailor your conference experience to meet your needs. He says SACSA feels like a family and there is networking from graduate through senior level. He likes that SACSA is more affordable than national organizations. And he believes SACSA is a fun time and provides opportunities to network and collaborate with other professionals.

Melvin A. Whitehead
Melvin A Whitehead
Doctoral Intern for the Center for Leadership and Service
2nd Year Doctoral Student, College Student Affairs Administration
University of Georgia

Melvin is the 2017 recipient of the Research Incentive Grant and his SACSA journey began last year. He and four colleagues presented a program titled, "An inclusive measure: The Art of Applying Critical Theories to Common Assessment Practices," at the annual conference in Chattanooga, TN. As someone relatively new student affairs and to living in the South, he looked forward to learning more about SACSA and why many of his program colleagues were so excited to attend. The energy experienced at his first SACSA conference and the sense of community it embodied was a nice welcome to student affairs in the South.

His current research focuses on the experiences of LGBTQ+ students of color at a community college in accessing resources, community, and support. He is using intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1991) as his theoretical framework to conceptualize how intersecting forms of power and oppression shape the experiences of the study's participants nd how the institution can better support them. He has finished data collection for the study and is currently in the data analysis stage. His hope is that the study's findings will inform administrators, student affairs practitioners, and faculty in providing support for this population.

Melvins says the Research Incentive Grant has been instrumental in helping him provide incentives for participation in the study. Without the grant, he would have had a more difficult time securing participants. The grant also paid for the transcriptions of approximately 6 hours of interview data, which saved him so much time!

His greatest benefit of SACSA membership has been the community and support. He says he gained valuable advice about the doctoral journey and was connected to practitioners who share his interests in community colleges at several SACSA conference sessions for doctoral students. He now feels there is a space for him within SACSA and no longer feels like an outsider to the community of student affairs practitioners based in the South.
