Once in a Lifetime Rotation Road Trip
CJ Miller and Hogan Smith have been planning for their APPE rotations since year one. But to them, it was more than just a question of the type of rotations they wanted to do. It was a question of where. The answer was, out west. Both are avid outdoorsmen with passions for traveling, skiing, and hiking. So they worked with the College to create a schedule of pharmacy rotations that would allow them to visit the Pacific Northwest.

Smith credits Sandy Rosa for giving a tremendous amount of help, as well as several Vermont pharmacists, including Jason Leuck '13, whose connections out west were key in helping to arrange their rotations.

"Although it wasn't easy to set up these rotations and all this travel can be tiring, we know that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity that we had to take advantage of," Smith said.

On June 28, the pair set off from Colchester in a customized Sprinter Van and within the first week visited Chicago, Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, Crater Lake, and Yellowstone National Parks and even had a safe encounter with a grizzly bear.

ACPHS Represents at Lung Force Walk

The first day of summer in beautiful Battery Park on the Burlington waterfront was the site for the 4th annual Lung Force Walk sponsored by the American Lung Association. Students doing their IPPE Health and Wellness rotation with the association helped to put together the event and then went above and beyond by not only forming an ACPHS team, but also soliciting donations, advertising the event, staffing the activity booths, participating in the Zumba warm-up, and scooping up the complimentary Ben & Jerry's ice cream for the finishers. Rebecca Ryan, Division Director of Eastern Health Promotion and the preceptor for the rotation said, "We weren't sure if we would have enough for the students to do to meet the requirements of the rotation, but they jumped in immediately and ran with it!"

The ACPHS team leader, Mitchell Ramsey, said: "It is nice to get out into the community to give back."
Innovation Fund: Thank You

The College launched the Innovation Fund in 2017 by setting our sights higher and making the Innovation Fund more than just an annual fund.

Through the Innovation Fund, we sought support of three student-centric initiatives:
  • Student research in areas like biodefense and cancer prevention
  • A space that would provide much needed health services to an underserved population
  • Residency & Fellowships
We asked and you responded. THANK YOU.

Your support generated more than $472,000 for the Innovation Fund, well over our goal of $400,000.

Because of you, our students have been able to work one-on-one with our faculty like Yana Chen, Meenakshi Malik, and Shaker Mousa researching subjects like biothreat agents, drug synthesis, and design and synthesis of molecular probes and therapeutic agents.

It means that the Collaboratory will officially open its doors this fall. Together with a professional Public Health and Pharmacy team our students will tackle the challenge of providing health care to the residents living in Albany's South End neighborhood.

Last, through the residency and fellowships our students gained experience in specialty areas of pharmacy and the health sciences under the mentorship of a faculty member.

Your donations made all of this possible. Thank you again for all you do for ACPHS. We are so proud to be a part of such a generous community.
VGN Undergraduate Student Summer Research Program

The Vermont Genetics Network (VGN, funded by the NIH) is a collaboration among the University of Vermont (UVM) and other Vermont baccalaureate schools focusing on the broad area of genetics and
human health & behavior. All areas of science, mathematics, and computer science research are appropriate as long as they are clearly biomedical.

Every year, VGN sponsors the Undergraduate Student Summer Research Program. This program aims to increase the number of undergraduates who go on to STEM careers from the local baccalaureate colleges by providing them with genuine research experience outside their home institutions. The student participants, paired up with faculty mentors, will spend 10 weeks during the summer conducting research in host institutions. And the students are required to present their work at the VGN Career Day in the spring. This summer, ACPHS-Vermont is proudly hosting three VGN summer interns:
  • Sabrina Hardy (from Lyndon State College, with Dr. Yana Cen)
  • Felisha Olmstead (from Lyndon State College, with Dr. Karen Glass)
  • Victoria Rathwell (from St. Michael's College, with Dr. Stanley Stevens)
We welcome the summer interns and wish them the best of luck.
