Succession Planning

More than 50% of all small-business owners are 50 or older, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. That means they are coming to the point in their lives when they need to think about a transition for their businesses.  And a business owner looking to make a career change will experience the same transition.

Will a family member take over? Is there an employee poised to buy the business? Should you list your business for sale in business publications?

Whatever the outcome, it is important to have a plan in place so that you understand what this transition will entail. A good plan covers both the human-resources aspects of a transition and the financial details, particularly if your succession plan is supposed to generate the money you will live on during retirement.

Michael Martens will provide some more specific detail on what you should be thinking about in terms of your retirement or other business transition. Please attend our next Chamber Chat on August 16 at 9 am in the Bryan Center to learn more. Click here to register.
