Historical Commission Corner
|
|
The onset of spring means an uptick in activity at the
Superior Historical Museum. In addition to our usual monthly opening on
April 7th, we have two very significant events on tap for you:
“The Columbine Massacre” is the topic for our annual
Spring Program. Check out the
program flyer for details.
Mr. Gerry Morrell, President of the
Lafayette Historical Society, will present a power point program telling the story of 6 miners killed by machine gun fire at this mine north of Lafayette in 1928. Join us on
April 19th at
7:00 p.m. at
Superior Town Hall for this fine presentation.
Another annual event is our very popular
“Historic Walk Through Old Superior” which will be held after the museum closes on
May 5th. This walk takes us to the homestead and farm buildings in
Grasso Park, then on south to the site of the
Industrial Mine and
Mine Camp. Commission volunteers will lead the walk telling history stories along the way. At the mine site, many foundations are still visible and volunteers will explain what buildings they were associated with and point out the actual spot where the coal mine shaft is located.
The walk begins shortly after closing at 2:00 p.m. on May 5th. Come early and visit the museum before the walk. Participants should plan on walking 2-3 miles over uneven terrain containing cacti and yucca plants along with old scrap metal. In other words, please wear strong shoes or hiking apparel.
Look for the
fire truck on April 7th. Weather permitting, it should be positioned beside the Superior Historical Museum at 2nd and Maple in Original Superior. Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
For more information contact
Bryan Meyer, Town Staff at
303-499-3675 or
Larry Dorsey, Commission Chair, at
303-499-1969.
Finally, a big thank you to
Paul Williamson for his donation of a statue of a coal miner carved from a piece of anthracite coal.

Celebrate Earth Day
April 22, 2018
|
|
|
Did you know that a single vehicle emits 4.7 tons of CO₂ every year? That’s roughly the same weight as two adult African elephants combined!
We can all do our part to help reduce how much CO₂ is released into our atmosphere. Every trip counts, so when you can, try riding your bike or taking the bus instead of driving.
Earth Day is April 22 and what better way to celebrate our great planet than enjoying the outdoors? Grab your friends or family and enjoy a bike ride to Wildflower Park for the
Arbor Day Celebration for some earth-friendly activities! Start planning your ride to the big celebration with Commuting Solutions’
Bike Northwest Bike Map.
