"On the Practice of Facing Impossibility"
Rabbi Cohler-Esses' Sermon
The sacred reading for the week of the Shabbat of Song is all about facing impossibility and going forward. In her sermon, Rabbi Cohler-Esses asks:
What impossibility have you faced? Are you facing? When does it feel like you just can’t move, can’t go forward? Have a hard time even getting out of bed in the morning? She introduces two figures who face impossibility-- the legendary Nachshon who walks into the sea and Miriam, Moses' older sister, who dances and sings her way with the women of the community into all-male space. In so doing Miriam includes those who were left out-- she dances them into inclusion, transforming the public space into one that became radically inclusive for all genders, for all humans. Rabbi Cohler-Esses calls upon each of us to find our own way of moving through impossibility -- slogging through, walking or even singing and dancing.
