Rick's Ramblings
Greetings from Rev. Rick

Rick's Ramblings...

If you haven't already heard, I am gearing up for a big trip next week! I have the good fortune of having a close clergy buddy in the Presbytery of Lackawanna, which covers the area of northeastern PA. Back in late fall he asked whether I would be interested in joining with a group of pastors from his presbytery which would be undertaking a fact-finding mission trip to Peru in April after Easter. Bill and I have been to many conferences together around the country and have been travel buddies to the Middle East on two occasions. So when I gave him a resounding 'I'm in!" he said, "I thought you might!" Of course, to confirm I had to check with the 'boss' at home to see if it would be ok for me to be gone for what amounts to 12 days. Joanne doesn't really like it when I go on faraway trips, and my original thought was for her to come along, but in the end April is crunch time in her job. I don't really like being away for extended periods of time either (apart from work I'm a homebody!). But we agreed this was the opportunity of a lifetime, considering the nature of the trip for me as a pastor and the fact that a grant would pay for all or part of our airfare (all of it, it turns out!).

So, I will be away from April 9 - April 20. While I am away local pastors will be on call in case of any pastoral emergency. Clerk of Session Kathy Coogen will have that information if needed. Robin Miller Curras, a pastor friend of mine who is Minister at Large in the Presbytery will fill the pulpit the one Sunday I am gone.

During our trip we will be visiting a number of Presbyterian Church-related mission projects throughout the country, focusing on several of the environmental challenges the country is currently facing. And of course we'll "squeeze" in some sight-seeing time - one doesn't go to Peru and not visit Machu Picchu, which is where we finish up.

It should be an amazing, experience, even if I don't know any Spanish!

I have been blessed to be able to do some amazing overseas travel during my pastoral career, due largely to the generous continuing education allowance I receive as part of my salary package. More than 15 years ago I received a sabbatical grant during which Joanne and I spent five weeks overseas visiting Italy, Greece, including several of the Greek Isles, Egypt, Turkey and Switzerland. I have been to Israel twice and to Jordan once and hope to return to the Holy Land one more time before I retire from active ministry, hopefully with some UPC friends.

And now to Peru! It doesn't get more exotic than that!
You can be sure I will return with many great stories and pictures for a presentation later in the spring or early summer.

There will only be five or six of us on this particular trip. Please pray for us as we visit this country that has such a colorful and eventful history and which continues to draw tourists from around the globe to its astounding natural landscapes.

And pray for my wife Joanne too, while I'm away (our three cats will be fine!).

Paz y gracia,
Rev. Rick

Operation Love Tsunami
One of our wonderful Confirmation traditions here at UPC is what we call "Operation Love Tsunami". We begin collecting small gifts, tokens of support or encouragement, foodstuffs, gift cards, etc. which are distributed to each member of the class during their annual Confirmation Families Dinner, which concludes our spring weekend away. This year's collection box is now up on the Literature Table in the church lobby. Please consider participating in this love offering that is so meaningful to the kids. If you have had a son or daughter in confirmation here at UPC, you know exactly what we mean!

If you want to give gifts by name, this year's class is: Sean Clarkson, Drew Miller, Kyle McHugh, Owen Penczak and Morgan Trotter.

And plan to be in worship when they lead our annual Mother's Day Service on May 13 and when they are confirmed on Sunday June 3.

World Vision's 6K for Water

On May 19, 2018 World Vision's Global 6K for Water will unite people around the world to walk/run on the same day for the same cause. That cause is water - why water?

* 6K (3.72 mi) is the average distance people in the developing world have to walk for water.
* The lack of clean water is the #1 preventable cause of death in the world.
* About 1,000 children under the age of 5 die everyday from unsafe drinking water.

But we can change that, right here in Chester! When you register for the Global 6K for Water, your registration fee provides lasting clean water to one child in developing world. Will you join us on May 19 to help end the water crisis? Visit  2018 Global 6K for Water  for more information!

We'd love for you to join us in our 6K walk on May 19 at 9:30 am starting from the Dickerson School parking lot in Chester.  If you plan to sign up, please choose "Chester, NJ" as your team during the sign up process.  If you are not able to join us on May 19, please feel free to make a donation instead to help bring life-saving water to those in need.

April Has A lot to Say
(Argaille A. Di Matteo April 1, 2018)

April has a lot to say,
Now that She's dawned her New Day!
"Come on, March and Your Snowy touch.
Don't you think that's a bit much?

"Four Nor'easters in a row,
Complete with winds and lots of Snow!
Winter's had Her time to shine!
Now the time is finally mine!"

Time for trees and plants to grow.
Time for flowers to start their show!
Yellows and pinks, lavenders, blues,
Cheerful flowers come shining through.

April Sunshine calls them out
With Its warmth spreading about,
Dancing with the stalwart trees,
Their sap a'running to new green leaves.

Without further introspection,
April heralds Christ's Resurrection.
For, from the "winter" of human souls,
Christ, like the Sun, drew us out, New, Whole.

Despite the winds of cold, starved hearts,
The Christ, His Message did impart.
Just like the Hope and Faith of Spring,
He rose again, and Earth did sing!

His Message true "If you believe,
You too can blossom and achieve.
All that you really need to do
Is let Faith, Love, come shining through!"

How, like the month of April, we
Await the chance to rise up, free.
To call up from our souls' "cold earth"
Our dreams, ideas to new birth.

In fresh new colors, bright and free,
We gain new eyes with which to see,
New ears to hear, new voices to sing
"HAPPY EASTER! HAPPY SPRING!"
