HEADBANGER TO HOMEBUILDER
Sometimes, you just never know what you'll end up doing in life
By John Zona, Chair, The Idea District Committee, Land Acquisition with Tim Lewis Communities

A few decades ago (yikes), as a freshman at UCLA, I found myself dreaming of a career in the homebuilding industry. Friends studying econ and finance were getting internships and summer jobs at places unknown to me, like the high rise on Wilshire Boulevard emblazoned with a giant "KB" marquee. I knew from day one I would end up here. All my coursework focused on land use and planning, and I was a fixture at ULI events across Los Angeles. My path was clear and the end goal in sight.

Actually, none of that is true.

I never thought I'd be doing what I'm doing today. In reality, much of my time as a Bruin was spent writing papers for the sociology degree I was working toward banging my head to eardrum melting metal and dreaming of a job in the music industry.  Eventually, I became an audio engineer, which continued as an evening gig through law school. I had the privilege of working with standout artists of the time including Nate Dogg (RIP), Warren G, Madonna, Too Short, E-40, and Dave Matthews.  Unfortunately, the lifestyle was unpredictable, and the pay was getting to hang out with real rock stars - I needed to pivot my career.
The thing about the music industry is that it's super competitive and requires a lot of talent, with no room for second guessers. Sound familiar? It should, because there's no doubt that we in homebuilding, on a daily basis, interact with some of the hardest working, interesting, and likeable people of any industry.

And that's what the next Idea District is all about. You'll hear the sometimes unlikely but true stories of how some of this industry's professionals ended up here. While wild stories and tall tales will be spun, ultimately, we want to encourage students and young professionals in attendance to consider a career in homebuilding.

So, please tell any young professionals you know that no matter what their background, degree, or current interest is, this industry has a place for them where they can thrive and grow.

Invite them come to the next Idea District on Thursday, April 12 (Promo Code that will get them in for free is Students4Free). All are welcome - especially longhairs and headbangers.

Out of School Youth Success

This has been an amazing year for our Out of School Youth Program. Not only have we had a record number of participants get their High School Diploma (you heard that right - not their GED but officially graduating High School!), but we are proud to say that upon completion of a successful Work Experience, we placed our youth Breanna with BIA Member L&S Framing!

L&S Framing first met Breanna when they hosted her for a 250-hour work experience. During that period, the Foundation paid her wages, bought her tools, and covered all liability and workers comp. L&S was so happy with Breanna and the experience that they have now hired her on full time as a full-fledged L&S Framing team member!

For more information about participating with the Out of School Youth Program or hiring qualified youth, contact  [email protected].

Thank you L&S Framing for your support!
