Chinese Students Share Hot Pot Tradition
Each year, MPH hosts a hot pot dinner to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year with our students, faculty, and larger community. This year more than 150 people joined us! The hot pot dinner is a “hot” event, but only because of the hard work, time, and resources provided by the Parents’ Association, our international students, and our budding Chinese Mandarin learners. Together, we hope by sharing one pot, new friendships are forged.

We greatly appreciate the support of our volunteers and coordinators:

Special thanks to Chef Christine and the Brock staff, as well as the many families who helped with clean-up!

A New Twist on Upper School Advisory
Advisory on January 27 included 30-minute workshops on the subject of American Politics, led by Upper School faculty. The discussions included:

  • Fake News
  • The Trade War with China
  • The American Dream, Education, and Poverty
  • What Is the State of the Presidency in the 21st -Century?
  • Does Race Matter in American Politics?
  • The Role of the Supreme Court
  • How Does 21st -century Russian Military Strategy Affect Us?

Also, to give a concrete response to the issues raised in those workshops, Joan Johnson, a Syracuse representative of the League of Women Voters, attended the Wednesday, January 29, assembly. She gave a presentation on the importance of voting and more generally, that of participating in our democracy. Anyone 16 and older was also able to register to vote.

Check out the photo gallery to the right, as well as a clip of Mr. Twomey Smith's workshop on The American Dream, Education, and Poverty.
Second-Grade Assembly
As part of their unit on the Earth, second-grade students shared their Readers Theater play with Lower School students at Assembly. The students played parts such as “Sun,” “South Pole,” “North Pole,” “Continents,” “Earth,” “Moon,” and “Scientist.” Each second grader researched facts about the specific part they played and then shared those facts at Assembly as well. Students in the audience (in Grades 3, 4, and 5) had the chance to ask follow-up questions. See the photos and video below.
Pre-Calc and M&Ms -- The Perfect Combination!
Using M&Ms (which were sure to be enthusiastically consumed at the end of class), Mrs. Meehan’s Pre-Calculus class tackled a lab focused on exponential growth and decay. (Because M&Ms each have a visible letter on one side and are blank on the other, they make great manipulatives for these kinds of trials; each time they are poured onto a surface, a certain percentage will be face up with the letter “M” showing.) Students used data from their initial trials to create equations that could be used to make predictions about future results. What they learn from all this can be applied to real-world scenarios, such as determining rates of investment growth when compounded interest factors in.

Suzuki Students Have Rhythm!

Suzuki strings education involves not only the participation of parents at lessons, but some fun instruction on rhythm. We visited one of Ms. Mirakian's lessons this week, while she was teaching her students about echoing rhythms and making a musical entrance on cue. See some photos and a video below!
Junior College Night
Director of College Counseling Will Cardamone led a panel discussion for this year's Junior College Night program. Erin Milin, associate dean of admission at Colgate University; Peter Hagan, director of admission at Syracuse University; and George Anselme , assistant director of admission at SUNY Geneseo presented to parents and students from the class of 2021. Topics included: admissions testing, financial aid, Naviance, finding the right match, and the application process. See the photos and video below.
Middle School Performing Arts

A lot of practice goes into making those Middle School performances amazing! We captured some of our students hard at work in this week's band, orchestra, and chorus rehearsals. See the photo gallery on the right!
Just for Fun...
We couldn't resist sharing this great photo of Lilah (5th Grade); looks like the book was just too good to put down as she walked back from the library!
