Come sing with Summer Choir!

Summer Choir Singers are any singers who wish to sing in the choir on any chosen Summer Sunday morning. They are welcome to come to the Chancel promptly at 10:00 a.m. and rehearse that morning’s anthem. Summer singers wear no robes, sing the Anthem, then join family and/or friends in the congregation for the remainder of the service.  All singers are welcome!

This Sunday, the choir sings "Simple Gifts," arranged by Mack Wilberg. With piccolo, flute, and handbell accompaniment, it will be truly wonderful music in worship experience!

Important Note:

There will be no Children's and Youth Fellowship on Sunday, July 16, because of the Youth Mission Trip to Ft. Worth. Nursery Cary will still be available on the Lower Level.

Children's and Youth Fellowship Hour will resume at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, July 23, in Room 206.

Commissioning for UPC Youth Mission Trip is this Sunday, July 16.

No Children's and Youth Fellowship this Sunday.
Thank You, UPC!
The UPC Youth Group would like to thank our church family and especially Robin Dennis, Suzi Parker, and the Service Committee for helping to organize a donation drive of food supplies for our upcoming mission trip to Ft. Worth. Thank you!!
Supper & Substance 2017 Begins Monday, July 17
First UP: "Fences"

2017 marks the tenth year for our summer dinner and movie discussion at UPC! This year, the Christian Formation Committee offers four movies--all illuminating themes of life and faith, and serving as visual parables that help viewers see how God’s messages of hope and love are revealed through contemporary films. Dinner is prepared by different groups at UPC, and donations go to that group’s chosen special service project. Dinner begins at 6:00 p.m., with discussion following at 6:30 p.m. A separate movie event is offered each Monday for children. Cost for the dinner is $7.00 for adults, and $3.00 for children ages 3-12.

You must sign up and pay for dinner in advance! This is important, as those preparing the meal must know how many to prepare for! Look for the sign-up table in the courtyard after church on Sundays. And of course you are welcome to come for the discussion if you do not wish to join us for dinner!

If you want to participate in the first Supper & Substance and will not be in church Sunday, July 16, please email the church office at [email protected] by this Friday. You may pay at the door July 17.

The first movie, sponsored by the UPC Deacons, is Fences, Monday, July 17. Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) makes his living as a sanitation worker in 1950s Pittsburgh. Maxson once dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, but was deemed too old when the major leagues began admitting black athletes. Bitter over his missed opportunity, Troy creates further tension in his family when he squashes his son's (Jovan Adepo) chance to meet a college football recruiter

A Note from Matt
Yesterday, as part of our summer preaching series on church stories, we heard the under-told story of the daughters of Zelophehad from Numbers 27. One of the rhetorical questions I asked at the end of the sermon was, “Where are the Daughters of Zelophehad children’s books?”

Well, it turns out: at least one of them exists. It’s called  “But God Rembered…,” by Rabbi Sandy Eisenberg Sasso, and it uses Jewish Midrash traditions to tell kid-sized versions of different stories about Old Testament women. I’ve got a copy on order, and I’m really excited to see how this story gets told again!
Church Stories in the Bible
Summer Sermon Series
You may have noticed in the last few weeks, UPC pastoral staff are a bit outside of the lectionary texts appointed for Sundays, offering sermons from the Bible about how the church is called to be the church.

As you travel this summer, don't miss an "episode" in this series. There are three ways to hear again past episodes:

Come Celebrate with John Knox Ranch!
Please join the John Knox Ranch staff for an evening of food, singing, and fun as we celebrate the completion of the JKR Dining Hall!

Saturday, July 15, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

On Memorial Day weekend in 2015, the Dining Hall was destroyed by a massive flood (as were other areas of JKR). After two years of serving campers and guests from a makeshift disaster relief kitchen, and after receiving generous gifts toward this recovery and recovery project,  we have rebuilt the Dining Hall! This new facility will enable us to serve both summer campers and retreat guests.

Hygiene Supply Summer Drive

The UPC Youth Ministry collects travel sized hygiene supplies year round, but the summers are a great time to help us stock back up. When you're traveling this summer either for vacation or for work, please remember to collect the travel sized hygiene supplies—from hotels, airplanes, wherever—and drop them off in the basket outside John Leedy’s office. These supplies go a long way to help those in need. Our VBS kids made up more than 60 hygiene kits last week—thank you, Heroes!—so our supply levels are a bit down. Please be sure that bottles are unopened / unused and that toothbrushes are individually wrapped. Thanks for your help!

SAVE THE DATE—Micah 6 Sunday, July 30!
On July 30, University Christian Church will host the Annual Meeting of Micah 6 of Austin with a reception at 12:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Micah 6 Board Members and members of the Micah 6 congregations are invited to gather at UCC to celebrate the M6 Food Pantry and the Sunday Street Youth Drop in Center. Did you know that the M6 Food Pantry is the largest in Travis County? And the Drop in Center has served more than 7,800 hot meals to Austin’s street youth? You will learn even more about this vital ministry at the reception. We will also get a chance to meet the new M6 Executive Director, the Reverend Barry Smith.
Barry and the Board have big plans for ministries of Micah 6, building on the founding spirit of 14 years ago, recruiting and expanding the cadre of volunteers who are the heart of the organization. The reception will be hosted by UCC. We need volunteers to bring finger sandwiches, chips, veggies, and / or cookies. Please let Sandy Hardin (UCC) know what you will be able to bring. You can email her at [email protected]. These are exciting times in the Micah 6 ministry. We look forward to seeing you at the reception!
