Dr. Paul Epstein quote
Oprah is Helping to Deepen the Conversation on
Childhood Trauma & ACEs
April 2018

As we celebrate springtime and the holidays of Easter and Passover, we are reminded of the message of rebirth and freedom. These holidays embody the spirit of hopefulness for a deepening and awakening of peace, joy, health and happiness in our lives.

Reflecting on the stories of Easter and Passover, the word resilience emerges as a primary theme. Resilience is the ability to adapt, adjust, accommodate, bounce back and rebound in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy and the inevitable stresses of life. I often tell others, and remind myself on a regular basis, that there is no cure for the human condition. There is however, the ability to choose to engage with life in a manner that utilizes the setbacks, difficulties and challenges that come along as an opportunity for healing and transformation. No matter how serious the challenge, experiences such as illness, the death of a loved one, natural disaster, divorce and job loss can become an integral part of propelling us on our spiritual path and healing journey.

For many of us the need to learn and cultivate resilience comes very early in life, in childhood and living through and surviving Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).

If you've followed my work, you know that this issue of Childhood Trauma, and its impact on health and disease, is one that I have been teaching and speaking about for many years. In my opinion, it is the main element that is missing in most of the treatment modalities in use today in the medical and healing arts.

I'm beyond excited that this issue is FINALLY starting to get some major recognition and publicity.

A film that I've known about for quite some time is getting more attention. RESILIENCE: The Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope is "a critically acclaimed documentary chronicling a new movement among pediatricians, therapists, educators and communities, who are using cutting-edge brain science to disrupt cycles of violence, addiction and disease."

Also, Oprah recently did a 60 minutes report on Childhood Trauma.  Oprah herself said, "This story has had more impact on me than practically anything I've ever done."

This is extremely exciting! Oprah has a way of moving ideas into the mainstream consciousness like no one else can.

"Thank you Oprah for sharing the science of the long-term
health impacts  of childhood trauma!
This issue will take all of us to address - and strong voices help
us move this critical work forward!!"
 - Dr. Nadine Burke Harris

"People have often asked me: what will it take for the general public
to understand unmitigated childhood trauma...Oprah."
- James Redford

This could be a real game changer in regards to creating awareness of the pervasive negative impact of childhood trauma and the integration of that understanding into medical care at all levels.

Of course, we need and hope to prevent and deal with the effects of ACEs at the earliest age and stages. If not addressed and prevented, research now shows that early childhood trauma can linger, live on and be held within the mind and body and lead to chronic disease throughout the lifespan. Screening people for ACEs, no matter what their age or presenting problem, needs to become commonplace in medical and psychological care. This is one of the primary messages I work to impart as I speak and teach.
Tapping into our ability to be resilient and learning to cultivate and strengthen our resilience is something we are all capable of and is a cornerstone of treating trauma and stress. The need to cultivate and build resilience is important, and useful, at every stage of life. Mindfulness meditation and compassion practice are wonderful tools to help us increase our resilience.

I invite you to watch Oprah's 60 minutes report, check out the film RESILIENCE: The Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope and read an article I wrote for Naturopathic Doctor's News and Reviews, Childhood Trauma and Adult Disease: What's the Real Diagnosis?
