April 2018

April is here and that means tax day is just around the bend -- how ironic that it should fall during "Stress Awareness month" (or maybe that is why April is so designated?).  We hope that the extra few days Uncle Sam gives this year (April 17th is the deadline) will help make your stress levels a little less taxing.

Want to add years to your life?  Keeping a positive attitude, exercising and eating healthy can do wonders for longevity by reducing physical, emotional and chemical stressors.  Check out our article below  on effective stress management strategies to help deal with  the inevitable curve balls life throws at you.  Better yet, come in for a visit! ( Please note our office will be closed April 12-14; however, BrainCore training sessions will continue to be held during this time.)

Yours in health,

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Brent Reynolds

P.S. Speaking of curveballs, baseball season is finally here!   Did you know that chiropractic care helps to improve flexibility and range of motion so that athletes can optimize performance? Bring your little slugger in for a visit to help him/her be more effective on and off the field!  For more sports health tips, visit our Holistic Nutrition &  Neurology  blog.
ADHD RX for Young Women Soars 700%;
Raises Concerns About Pregnancy Complications

A larming findings have been reported by the Center for Disease Control concerning the spike in the number of women of childbearing age who use attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications. Data show a 3 44 percent increase in the number of women ages 15 to 44; a 700 percent increase a mong those between 25 and 29; and a 560 percent increase in women 30 to 34 years old.

Since half of all pregnancies are unplanned, women taking ADHD drugs to manage symptoms may be unwittingly doing so while in the first trimester of pregnancy, a critical developmental time for the growing fetus.    Studies have shown that woman using  methylphenidates for ADHD were 11 percent more likely to have a baby with birth defects and 28 percent more likely to have infants with heart malformations.

Click on the video above to learn how neurofeedback brain-wave training can provide an effective, non-drug alternative for women of childbearing age to minimize risk of potentially harmful drugs.   Then, call us to schedule an appointment for a quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) to help identify dysregulation in the brain that may be underlying your ADHD symptoms.  Your "Q" will determine if you are a good candidate for BrainCore neurofeedback therapy.   Ask about our initial QEEG special.  631.265.1223.

Most of us experience varying degree of stress throughout our lives, whether it be acute (i.e. stuck in rush hour traffic on the Long Island Expressway) or long-term stress (working or living in a toxic environment).  While our bodies are typically well-equipped to recover from short-term stress, chronic stress can be detrimental to our health, causing heart disease, chronic pain, gastrointestinal issues and depression.

Since stress is part and parcel of everyday life, developing a toolbox of coping skills is essential to physical and mental health.   Practicing mindfulness can help to balance the mind and body, enabling one to step away from immediate stressful thoughts to improve perspective on new possibilities.   Therapeutic massage and aromatherapy using pure essential oils like lavender are other helpful tools that soothe and help promote calm.  Daily exercise and a healthy diet are all part of the stress-busting mix, as is regular chiropractic care which can help to reduce muscle tension and subluxation brought on by stress.  (Check out some more helpful stress-busting ideas here.)

Don't let stress take over your life. Come in for a visit -- let us relieve your symptoms and help you develop strategies to deal with stress appropriately and effectively.
April 23-27th is the sixth annual celebration of Every Kid Healthy Week which shines a spotlight on efforts to promote health and wellness for our children. While the premise of the week is built on preventing obesity, we think it's a good time to focus on the feeding the teen brain.

It's common knowledge that fast foods are bad for the waist line, but studies show that these junk foods are also detrimental to brain health. During the teen years, key neurotransmitters systems in the brain responsible for inhibition and reward signaling are under development. Consuming a diet of high calorie, low nutritional quality foods may negatively impact neurotransmitter development, "negatively impacting decision making, increasing reward-seeking behaviors and triggering poor eating habits into adulthood," according to a newly published study.

With their promise of increased mental performance and endurance, energy drinks are extremely popular with the teen population and college athletes.  These drinks contain high levels of sugar and caffeine, as well as the amino acid taurine and guarana extracts,  two common energy drink stimulants.  Research has shown that high consumption of these drinks by adolescents may produce adverse effects on learning and memory and increased alcohol consumption in females.

For a natural energy drink for your family, consider pure fruit or veggie drinks that pack a nutritional punch. In our practice, we recommend Ningxia Red, a nutritious blend of therapeutic-grade essential oils and "superfruits" including wolfberries, that help to support and maintain energy levels and calorie metabolism. (Learn more by clicking here, or call 631.265.1223).

Parents who model healthy food and drink choices to their young children can help establish positive eating habits that can carry through to the teen and young adult years (check out some brainy food ideas here).  Strive to make every bite (and sip) count!
