The BSA
has announced
bold, wide-ranging updates to its Youth Protection program. Even those Scout leaders who took the previous version of Youth Protection training must log into
My.Scouting.org
and complete the updated Youth Protection by October 1, 2018.
Finally, beginning June 1, 2018, all adults who will be present at a Scouting activity for 72 hours or more must register as volunteers and complete a background check and Youth Protection training. This includes parents, merit badge counselors and any other adult who will be there for an extended time.

We have plenty of resources, tools, and best practices to support your efforts. Our team is committed to helping your unit be successful. We can visit schools to talk with youth, distribute flyers, as well as help you staff a sign-up event and recruit parents to help volunteer.
Do you have an upcoming round-up, rally, or promotional event? Please reach out to us and we can help you reach more families than ever before!
Units who participate in spring recruiting efforts are still expected to participate in this fall’s Catch the Adventure Campaign at their local elementary school.

On Saturday, March 3, the Pathway to Adventure Council NESA Committee held the annual Youth Recognition Dinner which recognized the 2017 Class of Eagle Scouts, Quartermasters, and Summit Awardees. Held at the UIC Forum, 120 Youth Awardees attended to celebrate their accomplishments. Eagle Scout Timothy Witek, Quartermaster Elizabeth Johnson, and Summit Awardee Nicholle Riley spoke on the positive impact Scouting has had in their lives. Guest speaker and Distinguished Eagle Scout Dr. Michael Manyak detailed his numerous adventures in expedition medicine and how Scouting has played a vital role in his love of exploration. It was an amazing evening recognizing the youth of our council and we look forward to next year's dinner on March 2, 2019.

Attention unit leaders: The early bird fee for Napowan and Owasippe Boy Scout summer camps ends on May 15. Beginning on May 16, the fee increases to $350 for Scouts and $210 for adults. Please plan accordingly to ensure payments are made in full by May 15. (New Boy Scouts/crossovers receive the early bird fee until June 15).

It’s time to sign up for Cub Scout Summer Camp! Don’t miss out on all the fun we have planned. Summer Camp is an essential part of the Cub Scout program and introduces your Scout to the wonders of the outdoors and Scout camping. Our goal is to have every Tiger, Wolf, and Bear Scout attend a day camp, family camp, or overnight camp and all Webelos attend a Webelos cvernight camp. We have something for everyone from Bug Hunters at day camps located all over the Council, Pirates at Family Camp in Berrien Springs, Michigan and Scouting the Galaxy at overnight cub Scout and Webelos camps in various locations in Illinois and Michigan. Get your pack together and sign up or you and your Scout can attend and make some new friends.

Attention current 3rd and 4th graders (2018-2019 Webelos Scouts): Join us this summer for overnight camps that are specially designed for incoming 4th and 5th grade Webelos. Webelos camps are fun and action-packed with activities that interest Webelos Scouts, including swimming, boating, fishing, BBs and archery, and much more! These camps are offered in Illinois and at Owasippe Scout Reservation in Michigan.

Philmont is a BSA High Adventure Base located in Northern New Mexico. Scouts and Adult Advisors embark on a 12-day backpacking expedition through the rugged Sangre de Christo Mountain range, hiking 60 to 80 miles at elevations ranging from 6,500 feet above sea level to 12,400 feet at the top of Mount Baldy – the highest mountain on the ranch. Do you ever wonder where the vehicles we use at our camps come from? Safe vehicles our Rangers, Caretakers, and Summer Camp staff use are a necessity to maintaining our properties to help deliver a quality camping experience for the youth we serve. Money we spend on vehicles could be better spent on program and building enhancements.
If you have or know someone who is looking to donate a working vehicle, consider one of our camps. Donations can be from individuals, companies or municipalities upgrading their own fleet or car dealerships. All donations are tax deductible. The types of vehicles we are looking for are: SUVs, pickup trucks, mini vans, cargo vans, passenger vans, box trucks, stake trucks, most 4-wheel drive vehicles, all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles. Construction vehicles like bobcats and snow plows are also needed. If you're interesting in making a donation, please contact Joe Stocchero, Director of Camping Services.

Wood Badge is the ultimate leadership training program for adult leaders of the Boy Scouts of America. Established in 1919 by Robert Baden-Powell, Scouting’s founder, Wood Badge has been the training ground for hundreds of thousands of Scouters around the world. Building on the past, understanding the present, and looking to the future, Wood Badge stands ready to help you provide leadership for Scouting and America.

These classes are intended for Scouts and Scouters attending high adventure camps in 2018 or any Scout or Scouter who’d like to complete a WFA certification course.
These classes meet the requirements for Wilderness First Aid established by the Boy Scouts of America. The course fee is $135 (the renewal course is $90). The fee is due the morning of the first session. The certification card is emailed after successful completion of the class.
A series of two-day sessions will be available in 2018. Session will be held at Bridgeview Community Center from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the following dates:
A one day RENEWAL session is scheduled for May 19 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The maximum class size is 10 participants. The minimum age to attend these sessions is 14.

The Saint George Trek is The National Catholic Committee on Scouting’s High Adventure Catholic leadership program for older Catholic Boy Scouts and Venturing Crew members at Philmont Scout Ranch. The program brings Catholic high school youth from around the country together with selected priests, religious leaders, and seminarians for 11 days of backpacking in the context of a vocational retreat.

Community members celebrated St. Patrick's Day a week early as they raised money for two charities at Countryside's third annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 10.
Proceeds from sponsorships and parade entry fees benefited the Illinois chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Boy Scouts of America Pathway to Adventure Council.

Beebe has been active in Boy Scouting for 66 years. He started as a Cub Scout in 1952 and earned the Eagle Scout rank. He attributes his community service background to his scouting days, especially a food drive in which Scouts in uniform delivered food to needy families. “That was my inspiration for giving back to the community,” he said. “We were inspired and we saw the need to give back.” Other volunteering includes the Selective Service Board, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and Vietnam Veterans Association.

James Kennedy, a 16-year-old Oak Park Eagle Scout was thinking about what he would do for his service project, necessary to advance to the rank of Eagle, when he stumbled upon New Moms — the Austin-based nonprofit that provides housing, job training and other resources to young mothers.
"A family friend told me about New Moms and I did some research on them," Kennedy said during a recent phone interview. While he was learning about the New Moms, Kennedy discovered that this year marks the organization's 35th anniversary.

Sixteen-year-old
Eagle Scout
Daniel Yu, from Palatine, Ill., has already taken the Scouting program to the International Space Station, and last week he took it to our nation's leaders. Yu joined 11 Scouts on a trip to our nation's capital to hand-deliver the Boy Scouts of America's Report to the Nation to Congress.
