Don't Miss the 2018 Public Safety Expo on April 14
Mark your calendar for the City of Moreno Valley’s 5th Annual Public Safety Expo on Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Moreno Valley Civic Center.

Moreno Valley's finest police officers and firefighters will give residents an interactive look into how they keep our City safe. The Public Safety Expo's schedule is packed with exciting police and fire demonstrations and hands-on exhibits for all ages.

Bring the whole family to meet your Moreno Valley police officers and firefighters, eat delicious food from a variety of vendors, and enjoy music and giveaways.

The Public Safety Expo also provides an opportunity for job seekers and students to find out more about a career with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, CAL FIRE/ Riverside County Fire Department or one of the other regional agencies that serve Moreno Valley.

The 2018 Public Safety Expo will include:

  • Live fire suppression and car-cutting demonstrations - See first-hand how Moreno Valley firefighters free car accident victims trapped in vehicles

  • Live demonstrations by the Hazardous Device Team (HDT) - Watch the HDT robot maneuver to safely evaluate potentially threatening objects

  • Learn “sidewalk CPR” and how to use Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

  • K-9 unit demonstrations of finding and apprehending a suspect, sniffing out drugs, and locating a missing person

  • An interactive house trailer which provides a controlled environment to learn how to properly extinguish a stove fire, what to do when a smoke detector is activated, and how to escape a house fire safely

  • Fire engines, police cars and motorcycles, helicopters and other emergency response vehicles

  • MADD Crash Car exhibit which demonstrates how driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol can impact lives

  • Tours of the Emergency Operations Center to allow visitors to learn more about the Citywide Camera System and the City’s state-of-the-art disaster preparedness and response system

  • Representatives from the United States Marines, Army and Navy will be on hand with exciting displays showcasing our military

Demonstrations and displays are subject to change as emergency needs arise. The 2018 Public Safety Expo will be held at the Moreno Valley Civic Center, 22850 Calle San Juan de Los Lagos between Frederick Street and Veterans Way.

 Free parking is available at the Moreno Valley Civic Center and at the Moreno Valley Conference and Recreation Center.

Moreno Valley College Promise Initiative/Hire MoVal
Wins Award of Excellence
On March 16, the California Association for Local Economic Development (CALED) honored the City of Moreno Valley as the winner of the 2018 Programs Award of Excellence for the Moreno Valley College Promise Initiative/ Hire MoVal. Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez accepted the award.

The Moreno Valley College Promise Initiative was created to help fund the first year of community college for first time students. The program offers free tuition, fees and textbooks (not covered by financial aid) for the first year of college. The program also offers priority registration to ensure 12-15 units per semester and a Comprehensive Student Educational Plan (CSEP) that maps out classes from the first semester to the last, based on the student’s educational plan.

In an effort to strengthen and support the program, under the leadership of the Mayor and the City Council, the City approved an agreement to match the College’s efforts and pledged $50,000 to pay for the second year of the program for Moreno Valley residents attending Moreno Valley College.

In the first year of the program, the Moreno Valley College Promise Initiative funded more than 500 students and provided additional services strengthening that student’s chances for degree completion while simultaneously increasing educational attainment, a vital metric used by economic developers and expanding businesses.

“Partnering with Moreno Valley College on vital programs such as Hire MoVal and the College Promise Initiative is vital to the future economic vitality of our community,” said Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez. “By helping to eliminate barriers to college attainment we invest in the most valuable asset in our community—our youth.”
Cover-to-Cover Club Rewards Young Readers With In-N-Out
Moreno Valley children can earn free food from In-N-Out just by reading as part of the “Cover to Cover Club” Reading Program through Saturday, April 14.
Readers between the ages of four and 12 who read five or more books by April 14 will receive a certificate for a free hamburger, cheeseburger or grilled cheese sandwich from In-N-Out. The child must register with the Moreno Valley Public Library to participate in the program.

Each registered child can receive up to three certificates by reading up to 15 books by April 14.

Readers can sign up at either Moreno Valley library location and return them to either location to earn their certificate.

Special Lighting for the "M"
Did you know that you can request the "M" on Box Springs Mountain to be lit up in specific colors to recognize a cause or enhance an event?

City Hall's LED lighting system on Box Springs Mountain for the 'M' is designed to enhance local events and provide a source of civic unity and pride. The default color will be white.

Lighting the ‘M’ promotes the City, its civic institutions, state and federal holidays, and other public events of community significance and times of celebration. The City may accept community requests for special lighting to recognize a specific cause or to commemorate or enhance a specific event. Non-profit and charitable organizations can request that the 'M' be illuminated in specific colors to elevate awareness of their cause. 

Priority in choosing colors for the lights will be given to promoting events that celebrate the City, its civic institutions, City‑recognized holidays, public events and festivals. Requests to change the color or pattern of the 'M’s' decorative lights will be accommodated as dates are available. The City reserves the right to deny or modify requests.
