Sailboat racing season opens with the Shipwrights' Regatta with boats of all types of construction welcome. As always, the race is open to folks who would like to try sailboat racing, but do not have a boat. The regatta is presented by the Northwest Maritime Center and the Port Townsend Sailing Association.

This festival will bring relief from the winter blues with activities that focus on light, fun, art, physical activity and positive energy for all ages, featuring one of Sequim's best-known assets-sunshine! Dr. Tom Mumford will present All Things Kelp as part of the speaker series co-sponsored by the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and Feiro Marine Life Center. He will be talking about what kelp is, where it grows, what role it plays in the ecosystem, how to grow it, and what you can do with it.

There's fresh snow on Hurricane Ridge where opportunities for snowshoeing, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowboarding, tubing and more abound! For updates on road status and conditions, call the Road and Weather Hotline at 360.565.3131 for current info and follow @HRWinterAccess on Twitter. The morning status updates on the phone and Twitter typically begin around 8 am. Weather and road conditions permitting, Hurricane Ridge Road is open to uphill traffic from 9 am to 4 pm, Friday through Sunday plus Monday, February 17.
The road may close early or remain closed during the entire day due to poor road conditions or severe weather. All vehicles, including four-wheel drive, are required to carry tire chains. Snowshoe walks
are offered at 2 pm on weekends and some holidays. The walk lasts 1½ hours and covers less than a mile. Snowshoes and instructions are provided. Cost is $7 for adults, $3 for youth 6-15 years old and free for children under 5. Group size is limited to 25 people. Sign-ups begin at the Hurricane Ridge Information desk 30 minutes before the walk.

As you head outside for outdoor adventure in Olympic National Forest this winter, be sure to go with a buddy. Bringing a friend or two along not only adds to the fun of your experience but could save your life or your friend's, should something happen to you. Be sure to bring your cell phone and an emergency kit along too. Extra layers are always a good idea. Weather can change quickly, especially at higher elevations, so being prepared simply makes good sense.
