"The Opioid Epidemic - the Economic and Social Impact" featuring Sonya Waddell,  Director of Regional Economics for the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and Evan Behrle, Special Advisor for Opioid Policy at the Baltimore City Health Department. 
The presentation will include a look at facts, trends and the impact on macroeconomic conditions, and steps taken to address the city and state epidemic.

Service Project: MD Food Bank
May 30 from 4:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Join us for an opportunity to learn more about the mission of the Maryland Food Bank and its partnership with the Howard County Food Bank, while helping prepare food distribution for those in need.
LHC members are invited to take a shift at the Food Bank warehouse in Baltimore, packing boxes on the conveyor belt.  A limited number of slots for youth ages 12 - 17 are also available.
Space is limited and registration is required through the MD Food Bank portal.

Leadership Premier Information Breakfast

Potential applicants for the Premier program are invited to attend a session that provides an overview of the program and the opportunity to speak with LHC graduates. RSVP requested by April 12.


In February, the Leadership Premier program focuse d on coun ty government, and issues surrounding "Livable Communities."
Class members visited sites across Howard County to investigate issues from affordable housing, the environment, transportation to recreation and open space - and then discussed what is required to make a community livable for everyone.
 
Fun Fact: Did You Know?
There is a new  county Housing Repair Program called " Reinvest*Renovate*Restore." It provides low-interest loans to income-eligible homeowners to make necessary home improvements, such as a new roof, and cosmetic updates to update their homes. It is designed to help homeowners stay in their homes, address outstanding maintenance and repair items and improve overall neighborhood appearance, and can also help those with special needs.
Homeowners may apply for loans up to $40,000 and repay over 25 years.  Maximum household income may not exceed 80% of Howard County Area Median Income adjusted for family size.  Applicants must live in the home as their primary residence, meet minimum credit score requirements and have sufficient household income to repay the loan.  For more information visit here.

Heritage Housing Partners will present its first Legacy Awards to Kevin Kelehan (LP 1991) and Tom Carbo (LP 2015) at a breakfast on April 10 at the Meeting House. The awards were created to recognize those who have made a significant contribution to the field of affordable housing. 

Dr. Kate Hetherington (LP 2001), president of Howard Community College, has been selected by The Daily Record to receive its 2018 Influential Maryland award. She is one of 57 Marylanders chosen by The Daily Record for leadership and significant contributions to their respective fields.
Also being honored by the Daily Record are Kevin Kelehan and Kari Staton (LP 1999) who received the 2018 Leadership in Law award.
 
Among the honorees for the Daily Record's Top 100 Women are Kim Oldham (LP 2014), Howard County State's Attorney; and Jodi Finkelstein (LP 2006), Montgomery County Commission for Women.  Abby Glassberg (LP 1990) was inducted into the Circle of Excellence as a 3-time winner.
 
Colleen West (LP 1999), Executive Director of the Howard County Arts Council, was honored with the first Leadership in the Arts award at their annual Celebration of the Arts, to commemorate her 20 years of leadership. The award will be given annually as the Colleen West award.

Gov. Hogan named Neveen Kurtom (LP 2018) as chair of the Maryland Commission on Middle Eastern Affairs. Neveen is the founder of her own law firm in Howard County.
 
Jeryl Baker (LP 2014) has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Columbia Downtown Housing Corporation. The corporation administers the Downtown Columbia Housing Fund to affirmatively further fair housing.
 
Pat Sasse (LP 2010) has announced her retirement as Executive Director of the Bright Minds Foundation. Pat was the first executive director of the organization and served since 2009.
Nonprofit Board Opportunities

Girls on the Run of Central Maryland is a program for girls in 3rd - 8th grade that incorporates a program focused on building confidence and character with an appreciation for health and fitness. Trained volunteer coaches throughout Howard and Carroll counties lead girls through a ten-week program that culminates with a service project and completing a celebratory 5K event. GOTR is seeking diverse candidates with an interest or expertise in fundraising, marketing, communications, finances, or other skills that will benefit a growing nonprofit organization. Celebrate diversity and strengthen our community by sharing your story at  #OneHoward  Live - a day of performances, testimonies, and presentations designed to bring people of all backgrounds together to learn from one another. Organizers are looking for enlightening presentations to promote dialogue and inclusion. People of all backgrounds are invited to apply, especially students.
