The 72nd Annual Stone Ridge Library Fair is set for Saturday, June 9, rain or shine, from 10am to 3pm on the Library Lawn. Bag Sale, Sunday, June 10, 10am - 3pm
 Everyone is invited! Join us under the tents for book bargains galore, our famous plant sale featuring annuals, perennials and daylilies, Eleanor's Emporium with gently used tableware, Kids books and activities, the Saturday Knitters, a 50/50 Raffle and the Stone Ridge Library Foundation raffle for a wine basket.
 Cherries will be joining us again this year, providing delicious summer picnic fare, including vegetarian options. Mouthwatering Strawberry Shortcake, scrumptious home baked cookies, lemonade, coffee and tea, and cotton candy will round out the menu.
 We are excited to host some wonderful local musicians again this year, to-date, Cheryl and Kurt, Trio Mio and BLOOM with the B2s. More to follow...
 Volunteers are the heart of the Library Fair! With the "retirement" of long-time volunteer coordinator, Barbara Cazakoff, we are putting in place a new, online signup program to help us keep things running smoothly. We will follow up in a couple of weeks with an e-blast with details.

Library Foundation Hosts "Sunday Tea" Fundraiser

The Stone Ridge Library Foundation
will host their annual recognition event, a "
Sunday Tea," on May 6th honoring Priscilla Derven and Stephen MacDonald for their immeasurable support. The event will take place from 1:00 to 3:00 in the afternoon. There will be a short presentation at 1:00 pm followed by tea sandwiches, desserts, and a selection of hot tea, served in the recently restored 1798 stone building.
Tickets are $30 per person, $50 per couple.
Stay tuned for more information. Money raised will be used for improvements to the Stone Ridge Library's final phase of restoration.
The spring art exhibit, featuring paintings of local resident Barbara Gordon will be on view during the event for everyone to enjoy.

"Personal Dreaming" Art Workshop

Materials Fee: $10 per person, bring to class
Class size: 10-12 people
 Create an abstract painting using ideas and techniques taken from the contemporary Australian Aboriginal desert painting tradition. Many of their symbols and ideas come from their "Creation Time," also known as the Dream Time. In this class you will create symbols to form your own visual language. These might be an animal, flower, plant, stars, shapes of various states or countries, or other meaningful objects to symbolize your personal experience. With these symbols and the help of the instructor, you will create your own "personal dreaming," representing aspects of your life in beautiful colors in the traditional flat "dot" style.
Materials will be provided, and students will keep their creations. Ellie will guide us step by step as we create a colorful background and a narrative, using images we select to tell our story. In the first session, we will create symbols, select color schemes and layouts. The second session will be devoted to creating the story by painting backgrounds and filling in with dots of contrasting colors.
 Ellie Anderson was born in Queensland, Australia and trained as an art teacher. She taught for several years before catching the travel bug. In the late '60s she left Australia to travel and work in England and Europe. After marrying an American and starting a family she completed a BA in Fine Art at George Mason University and taught high school art in Fairfax, Virginia.
In retirement Ellie and her husband spent 10 years back in Queensland, Australia. There she devoted her time to painting and exhibiting with a group of like-minded art enthusiasts. This focus on art and re-exploring the familiar landscape of her childhood inspired her.
"I love the challenge of interpreting my ideas on canvas and use mainly the mediums of oil, acrylic and pastel. I especially love color, contrast and pattern making. When you start a new canvas, you enter another world. It's exciting, challenging and a wonderful way to spend time."
 Now living in Accord, New York Ellie continues to be inspired by the landscape, animals and colors around her. Ellie exhibited at the Stone Ridge Library last spring and summer and hosted impromptu sessions to discuss her methods and process.

How Do You Rewrite Your Life's Script after You've Suffered a Massive Brain Tumor? Janet Johnson Schliff was an award-winning special education teacher for 25 years. But, as her abilities began to fade away with no medical explanation, she suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) behaviors that wreaked havoc on her much-loved teaching career.... A massive brain tumor was discovered, and finally, after brain surgery, the odd behaviors it caused that had ruled her life for years were gone, only to be replaced by a different set of life-long challenges due to her injured brain. Her story will inspire and inform her readers. Janet taught Special Education from 2001 - 2007 in the Rondout Valley School System. After a short reading, we will have a Q & A session. Books will be available for signing and purchase ($20).

 The Rondout Valley Scholarship Fund has started a scholorship in memory of Sandi Zinaman, a long time staff member the Stone Ridge Library. Help us keep Sandi's legacy alive in the community by recognizing 2 students each year who love books and reading.

Writing Workshop with Carol Bergman

The Stone Ridge Library is pleased to announce
"Inspired By Nature Writing Workshop" featuring author and NYU writing instructor, Carol Bergman. The program is a free to participants, but, because space is limited, registration is required, and available on the library's website
stoneridgelibrary/calendar.
Participants should bring a no-line notebook, a free-flowing pen, Glu-Stick, their memories of hikes and walks, favorite photographs and pictures of nature and their imaginations. In the workshop, Ms. Bergman will teach how to use journal notes, observations, sketches, photographs, dreams and visualizations as well as free associations to generate ideas for short stories, poems, memoirs, and essays. Beginners and seasoned writers are welcome in this interactive, dynamic class.
Carol Bergman's journalism and narrative nonfiction has been published in
Willow Review, Onion Review, A Room of One's Own, Absinthe Literary Review, The Bridge, Potpourri, Epiphany and many other publications in the US, the UK and Canada. "Objects of Desire," appearing in
Lilith and
Whetstone Literary Review was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in nonfiction. "Another Day in Paradise; International Humanitarian Workers Tell Their Stories," was published by Orbis Books (US/Canada) and Earthscan Books (UK/Commowealth) and was nominated for the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize. Her articles, essays, reviews and interviews have appeared in numerous publications including
The New York Times, The Times (of London), The Christian Science Monitor, The Daily News Magazine, The Amsterdam News, Newsday, Cosmopolitan, Woman's World, Family Circle, Art Times, Cineaste, Salon.com and The Jewish Forward. She is the co-owner of

Barbara Gordon - Spring artist
|
 Local Artist Barbara Gordon is the Library's featured artist for Spring 2018. Her work features abstract images and landscapes and will be on view through mid-June. Some of the paintings are available for purchase. For additional information and examples of her work, visit

 Barbara Gordon holds a BFA in painting from Cooper Union in New York and did post-graduate work in Paris at the École des Beaux Arts and Atelier 17, S.W. Hayter's famed printmaking workshop. She has received support from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and Hans Hoffmann's Provincetown Workshop and was nominated for a Tiffany Foundation award. Her work has been widely exhibited here and abroad in one-person and group shows in New York, Paris, Provincetown, MA, Southampton, NY, Montclair, NJ and Woodstock, VT. Her prints are included in the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop Archives and Collection at the Library of Congress.
 Barbara Gordon is also an award-winning filmmaker. Her film about world hunger, Edge of Survival, received the first World Hunger Media Award at the United Nations and is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Her documentary work has been broadcast on CBS, NBC, ABC, PBS, The Discovery Channel and A&E and screened at The Museum of Modern Art, the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, the Montclair Art Museum and the Phyllis Kind Gallery in New York.

Two separate writers' groups meet on alternate Mondays at the library, with a maximum of 10 participants in each group. This program is designed for those who are actively writing and publishing work and who want to participate in a structured critical feedback process. Cathy Arra, a poet, writer, and former teacher of English and Writing in the Rondout Valley School District, facilitates the groups.  KNITTING GROUP
Every Saturday
10am-noon
The Stone Ridge Library Knitters meet every Saturday morning from 10am - 12noon. All ages and experience levels can join us and drop-in knitters are also welcome. We each bring our own supplies and do our own work, but one of the best things about us is that whatever obstacle or confusion you might encounter, you're likely to receive as much comment and advice as you need to get where you're going with a project. Some of us can help toward the repair of knitted or crocheted items too.
 The group is sociable and lively, and our conversation and sharing is just as wide-ranging as our projects. We are especially interested in the UFOs (Un-Finished Objects) that members bring in and love the show and tell of projects under way and being finished, new or old, simple or complex. Though knitting is our love and mainstay, we graciously adapt ourselves to stray crocheters and those of us who simply must take to the hook when the spirit moves. We share articles, magazines and books on knitting. Donations of yarn to the Library get made up into items for sale at the Library Fair and during the winter holidays for the benefit of the Library. Some of us also knit things for local hospitals or for the U.S. troops.
