We celebrate National Library Week and National Poetry Month in April!
The theme for National Library Week is "Libraries Lead".
Appalachian Regional Library is leading the way for our community to learn about how to take care of your mental health. Pick up a copy of Cracked Not Broken by Kevin Hines at the library -- either a cataloged copy with your library card or give us a call to see if we have a Read and Return copy.
There are two opportunities to hear Kevin speak in Watauga County:
  • Boone United Methodist Church on Monday, April 16 at 6:30 PM. (meet and greet beginning at 5 pm ) Books will be sold before and after the presentation.
  • Mount Vernon Baptist Church as part of the State of the Child Forum on April 17 at 2 pm

National Library Week, April 8-14
This week, enjoy guest readers for story times, a movie, yoga, programming on mental wellness and author Susan Rivers!  Look for a bookmark in your books for the option of either a Stick Boy Bread Company free cookie coupon or $1 off of your fines! 
  • Monday, April 9:  State of America's Libraries Report released, including Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books of 2017
  • Tuesday, April 10:  National Library Workers Day, a day for library staff, users, administrators and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers   Nominate a stellar library worker!
    Nominations may come from library users, students, children, colleagues, faculty, or management.
  • Wednesday, April 11:  National Bookmobile Day, a day to recognize the contributions of our nation's bookmobiles and the dedicated professionals who make quality bookmobile outreach possible in their communities. Sandra Diaz, a nutrition and health coach, will present "Nutrition and Lifestyle Interventions" from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm
  • Thursday, April 12:  Take Action for Libraries Day, let your county commissioners know how much you value the library!                                        Shred-It truck at library at library 10 am to 1 pm.  Local Government Federal Credit Union will have a table set up as well.                                         Susan Rivers, author of "The Second Mrs. Hockaday", will speak to High Country Writers at 10:00 am on the writing process and will present a book talk at 2:00 pm
This year, in keeping with the Libraries Lead theme, patrons may tell how the library led them to something of value in their lives.
One randomly selected winner will receive a $100 VISA gift card and a copy of "Firebird", the Coretta Scott King Award-winning book by Misty Copeland, 2018 National Library Week Honorary Chair.  The promotion begins Sunday, April 8 at noon CT and ends Saturday, April 14 at noon CT.  Click on the picture for more information.  
Legal Aid of North Carolina
"Social Security and Disability" is a free legal self-help webinar from Legal Aid of North Carolina.  This free clinic will educate participants on the types of adult Social Security Disability benefits, how you qualify, the application process, and what you will need to show to prove you are entitled to benefits. There will  be an instructional video. At the end of the video, participants can ask general questions to a volunteer attorney through a webinar. Specific legal advice is not provided at these clinics.

History of Downtown Boone
On Thursday, April 5 at 5:30 pm, Dr. Eric Plaag will present "Building Boone:  An Architectural Overview of Downtown."  His talk will include historical images of some of Downtown Boone's most significant buildings and the stories behind their construction.  This is a co-sponsored event presented by the Watauga County Historical Society and Watauga County Public Library.
Feed Your Head:  Supporting Mental Wellness through Food and Lifestyle

On Wednesday, April 11 at 5:30 pm, Sandra Diaz will present "Feed Your Head:  Supporting Mental Wellness through Food and Lifestyle."  She will discuss how providing the brain with the physical and emotional support it needs can help you be more content, focused, productive and resilient  Sandra Diaz is a health coach  and will discuss functional medicine theories and emotional health practices that can help you support your mental wellness.  While not a nutritionist or mental health professional, she is impassioned about empowering individuals in pursuing a more proactive approach to their mental health even as she works with her own issue of anxiety.  Provided by the Good Neighbor grant promoting mental wellness in our community.

Free screening of the 2006 documentary film "The Bridge" by Eric Steel on Monday, April 23 at 5:30 pm.

San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge is the site of numerous suicides and attempted suicides every year. Filmmaker Eric Steel and crew set out to document these suicides and attempts over a one-year period, hoping to comprehend the phenomenon of suicide by interviewing those who attempted to end their lives at the bridge and their family and friends.

Small Business Bootcamp
Wednesday, April 25
4:00 pm - 7:00 pm.
 Geared towards those wanting to start their own business, local entrepreneur and former Small Business Center Director David Waechter teaches the basics of getting your business off the ground. 
This 3 hour session discusses the topics that you need to be aware of.  Topics in this course include:
  • How to name your business and why your business name is so important
  • Registering your business with Secretary of State
  • How to obtain your LLC, Sole Proprietorship, or Incorporation
  • How to find the proper tax forms 
  • How to obtain your tax ID or your EIN (Employer Identification Number) from the IRS

Dementia Friendly Training
The Dementia Friendly training is centered around helping our community be aware and know how to be helpful to those with Dementia and Alzheimer's disease.  Learn the signs, symptoms, and ways to assist members in the community with Dementia, as well as ways to identify early signs of cognitive impairment to prevent early onset of Dementia.  By learning these skills it will empower the person who is suffering and how they can be of assistance.  For more information, click here.
