Students Fare Well at OC Science and Engineering Fair
The Orange County Science and Engineering Fair (OCSEF) is a nonprofit educational organization that has promoted science and engineering in Orange County since 1955. The educators, scientists, and engineers who volunteer their services are committed to educating, guiding, and motivating students to engage in project-based learning in all fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to be college and career-ready in the 21st century.

Two weeks ago, we sent 20 of our students to the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair. We are so excited to announce that seven of our students placed or won a special award at the fair. Kamran A., Vivian T., and Pola P. advanced to the California State Science Fair, and we cannot wait to see how they do on April 23 and 24.

Pitch Burst
The Fairmont Parent Association's annual fundraiser is an event in which the students pitch a ball, hit a target, and pop a water balloon to soak their favorite teacher or staff member! We are changing it up this year! We will have each elementary class and junior high grade participate together as a class! Let's work together to get the most throws for every student in the class. If you would like to donate, please fill out the fundraiser form, and return to the NTFPA mailbox in the front office.

Fairmont Prep Students Have Eye-Opening Experience at Wondercon
On Friday, March 23, Fairmont Film and Visual Arts students journeyed the Anaheim Convention Center for Wondercon, a three-day celebration of film, animation, comics, games, and pop culture.

Students were able to attend panels that featured members and casts of the film and television industries and learned valuable insights into the production process of films and television shows, such as Star Wars, Jurassic Park, The 100, and Marvel's Cloak and Dagger. For example, students attending a panel about animation and special effects were able to meet and ask questions of visual artist John Van Vilet, who worked on movies including Star Wars, Tron, Indiana Jones, and X-Men.

"It truly made me feel more secure about going into the film industry because [I learned] that you don't have to be famous to be perfectly happy and make a good living, and that make me really excited," Fairmont Prep junior Amanda Dalby said.

Students also walked around the exhibit hall floor, which featured toys, games, posters, merchandise, and art centered around pop culture. Most students' favorite part of the floor was Artist's Alley, where many professional and semi-professional artists displayed their talents and served as inspirations for art and film students alike.

Overall, the convention was a valuable experience that opened many students' eyes to the staggering impact that art and film have on society.

"I would say that I left Wondercon with a much greater understanding of film culture," junior Reid Bobrownicki said. "I have also now seen how strongly films or other things can become woven into who a person is."
