SPRING 2018 NEWSLETTER

Has the urge to spring clean crept its way into your life yet? Well, the need to freshen things up has certainly made its way to the Marketing Committee of Leave A Legacy. For several years now, we have been using stock stories and photos in our Leave A Legacy ads and promotions. This year, we would like to phase out those pieces and replace them with real stories and photos of individuals who have impacted charities in our own community.

Do you have a story about a donor who made a lasting impact on your organization via a planned gift? If so, we would love to hear from you. Specifically, the Marketing Committee would work with you to devise a Leave A Legacy ad which highlights this gift. Once finalized, Leave A Legacy may then use your organization's story in local media efforts to raise awareness about planned giving. It's a win-win for your organization as well as Leave A Legacy.

Please contact Kendall Menzer, kendall.menzer@yorkbar.com, and/or Jen Hitz, jhitz@legupfarm.org if you are interested in participating.

Thank you for your continued partnership with Leave A Legacy!

2018 Membership News

The 2018 partner applications are coming in nicely. Most of last year's professional advisor partners have renewed and about half of the nonprofit partners have. Please let me know if you have misplaced your 2018 information!

And remember, for the first time, organizations interested in belonging to both Leave A Legacy AND the Estate Planning Council can get a discount off EACH organization's dues.
Nonprofit Partner Question -

Please provide an example of how one may create an estate plan which supports both family and charity(ies) of choice.

If the individual or couple thinks he/she/they have adequately provided for the surviving spouse or family, then a permanent life insurance policy, which he/she/they feel is no longer needed, can be gifted to the charity.  The policy ownership, beneficiary and premium payer is now the charity.  The donor should continue to make an additional gift to the charity to pay the premium or the charity can take ownership of a paid up policy, so premium payments are no longer required.  Eventually, this gifted policy can provide an endowment for the charity to replace the annual gifts that stopped due to the donor's death. There may be tax advantages of a life insurance policy gift.  For example, the premium tax basis in the policy may provide a charitable deduction, but the donor should consult with their tax advisor.
