Historic Preservation and Cultural Heritage Community Reacts to President's Comments on Targeting Iranian Cultural Sites

Grand Bazzar of Tabriz. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.
Preservation Action and other organizations dedicated to the protection of historic and culturally significant sites in the United States and abroad reacted strongly to comments made by President Donald Trump suggesting the possible military targeting of heritage sites in Iran as tensions between the nations rose this week. The President has since walked back some of those comments and the Pentagon reaffirmed the United States would not target cultural sites.

Preservation Action joined other historic preservation and cultural heritage organizations in denouncing the comments. Iran contains incredible historic and culturally significant sites, including 24 sites listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, important to the collective history of all humankind. The United States has long been a leader in protecting historic sites around the globe, with examples like the Monuments Men protecting historic treasures in Europe during World War II. We urge the United States government to continue that legacy by supporting the preservation of the world's cultural heritage and abstaining from threatening the destruction of irreplaceable historic and culturally significant sites. W e also appreciate the response from members of Congress, across the political spectrum, reaffirming their support for protecting world heritage.

Below are some of the statements reacting to the President's comments.

National Trust Accepting Applications for the 2020 List of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is currently accepting applications for the 2020 list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. Do you know an important historic site that could benefit from the national spotlight? Nominate the site to be included on the 2020 Most Endangered List. Submissions are due by February 5th.

Since 1988, the National Trust has used its list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places to raise awareness about the threats facing some of our nation's greatest treasures. The list, which has identified more than 300 sites to date, has been so successful in galvanizing preservation efforts that less than five percent of these sites have been lost.

When evaluating a potential site for inclusion on the list, the National Trust considers a range of factors, including its significance, whether there is a local group engaged in its preservation, the urgency of the threat the site faces, and potential solutions to that threat. Sites with a connection to women's history are particularly encouraged to apply this year.
