April 2018 Chapter Meeting

- We will hear from Waleed Wadi, Director of Risk Management at Kum & Go, who will talk about a variety of risk management topics, including: managing the construction of the Krause Center (in-progress Downtown), the shift from traditional risk management to enterprise risk management, safety controls in convenience stores, and more.
- Our breakfast buffet includes your choice of: scrambled eggs, bacon, hash brown potatoes, biscuits/gravy, fresh fruit, mini muffins, and coffee/tea/juice.

Happy April!
This month, a few of the chapter officers are travelling to Baltimore for the CPCU Society Leadership Summit. This is a great event where volunteer leaders at the local and national level meet to network, attend business meetings, learn about running volunteer organizations, and attend sessions on technical insurance topics. While there, I will be presenting in my role as the Chair of the Personal Lines Interest Group on how to lead an interest group, create value for members, and collaborate with chapters. Now, if you are like some CPCU Society members, you are thinking...interest groups, what are those?
Interest groups are a group of professionals with an interest in a specific discipline or functional area of the insurance industry and help members connect with like-minded professionals. The Society has 14 interest groups including claims, underwriting, loss control, and reinsurance. You can find a complete list of interest groups here.
As a benefit of your CPCU Society membership, you can join one or all of them depending upon your interests. Interest groups are responsible for much of the content you see from The Society including webinars, articles in Insights, and seminars at the annual meeting. The interest group committees are responsible for coordinating these efforts and are made up of CPCU Society volunteers. For those looking to be more involved, volunteering on an interest group committee is a great way to be involved, deepen technical knowledge, network, and build leadership skills. You can sign up to volunteer here.
Have you been receiving emails from something called the Agent and Broker Interest Group and wonder why? Well, if you haven't designated your primary interest group, you likely have been assigned to the Agent and Broker Interest Group by default. To receive communications from the interest group that interests you most, you need to go into your profile and designate your primary interest group. To do so, log in to
www.cpcusociety.org
and select "interest groups" from the drop-down menu under your name in the top right corner. Then select one primary interest group and as many secondary ones as you want - it's that easy!

My name is Megan Carpenter and I am a proud Iowa native. I was born and raised in West Des Moines with my twin sister Katherine and younger twin brothers Ross and Cole. I attended Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in financial counseling and planning and communication studies with a minor in general business.
During my last two years at ISU, I was determined to go to law school and even made it all the way through the application process until I was presented with an amazing internship experience at Holmes Murphy the summer going into my junior year. I continued my internship with them until graduating and then acceptied a full-time position with Holmes Murphy, entering their training program The Brainery, which allowed me to study employee benefits in Dallas for two months.
Upon my return to Des Moines, I began my career at Holmes Murphy in Enterprise Business Development and currently reside in the commercial claims department. I pursed the CPCU because it provides extensive education in our insurance field and will allow me to offer professional advice and deliver excellent customer service to my clients. I am stuck in the risk management vortex and I couldn't be happier and feel more engaged in my career.
My CPCU involvement will allow me to grow in a multitude of skills, such as communication, networking, professionalism, leadership, and mentorship. I am excited to join the Chapter and meet all the lovely members!
