IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Last quarter, Mr. Anello's IB Economics students learned about the role of aid and microfinance in improving economic development of Lesser Developed Countries (LDCs). Students lent money through Kiva.org  to give short-term loans to development projects from around the world. One of the many problems in LDCs is that there is little/no access to lines of credit due to domestic savings issues. Without available loanable funds, entrepreneurship and economic growth is difficult to occur. With micro loans through sites like Kiva, people in need gain access to loanable funds to help themselves, their communities or their schools.

This year, Mr. Anello's 5th and 7th period classes each gave to a worthy cause. After researching the available loan options/recipients, students made presentations pleading for their selection's loan. The classes ended up selecting, and partially funding, a recipient in El Salvador,  who was seeking a loan to provide fish farmers with the food needed to raise their fish, which will increase their production and income levels. This loan will help improve income levels and economic development in the region. The other recipient was looking for a loan to purchase 67 water filters to sell to his neighbors to provide them with safe drinking water. This will help save families time, money and health issues that will improve their overall quality of life and improve economic development in the region.

In total, Mr. Anello's students over the last several years have given $250 in loans to people from around the world. Countries given to include: Indonesia, El Salvador, Colombia, Kyrgyzstan, Palestine, Philippines and Uganda!
