Principal's Message
March 30,  2018
Dear Families and Friends of OLQP:
Teachers work to meet the needs of all of their students. They differentiate instruction in order to help students reach their potential. Differentiation can be driven by small group activities in class, centers designed for particular outcomes, project based learning, and class assignments. For students who achieve above grade level, OLQP teachers use many "gifted and talented" program strategies. Characteristics of a gifted program include opportunities for application of higher level thinking, problem solving, and in-depth learning. When students engage in differentiated class activities, project based learning, Writer's Workshop, Accelerated Reader program, and STREAM activities, they are challenged to reach their potential. It is important to note, that in the midst of an enriched, challenging curriculum, even gifted students need to develop and hone the skills associated with the core curriculum - those objectives and standards associated with achievement at a given level. Parents can partner with teachers by staying connected through school communications and visiting with teachers to understand better how their children's needs are being met when there are questions or concerns. The partnership between home and school really does make a difference!
This week, students have been focusing on Holy Week and what that means. They were reminded that the reason we have early dismissal on Holy Thursday and a Good Friday holiday is so they can attend services in their home parishes as well as celebrating these great feast days with family and friends. A Franciscan "Short Way of the Cross" was gifted to all of the students so that, if they are unable to attend services, they could still pray the Stations of the Cross at home on Friday. Holy Thursday came to life in religion classes. Students in lower elementary re-enacted the Last Supper with an emphasis on the institution of the Eucharist. Middle school students entered into the historical life of Jesus and learned about the Seder meal and the significance behind what was shared. The students experienced the meal for themselves as a community. Lessons at morning prayer, prayer aids, and dramatizations enrich students' understanding of the Faith.
All of us pray that each of you experience a beautiful Easter filled with graces and blessings from the risen Christ. Thank you for being part of the mission and ministry of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School.
Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,
Mrs. Marianne Mechura, M.Ed.

Did You Know?
Holy Thursday

On Holy Thursday, Jesus was celebrating the Passover.  The Jewish Passover was a foreshadowing of Jesus' entire Passion and the Institution of the Eucharist.  At the Last Supper, Jesus transformed the Passover Seder into its full meaning - The Eucharist.  He saved us from the slavery of sin and through the Eucharist continues to give us the graces to fight the temptation of sin.
At our OLQP Seder meal, we did the traditional house cleaning by cleaning our desks and searching for any "leaven" in the room.  The leaven was represented by a hidden mini-cake.  Of course, the student who found it, got to eat it.  But, then each student was given a mini-cake much to their happiness.  We go through the washing of the hands 3 times and then we set up our Seder plates.  Each food item is placed in a particular location.  The students had unleavened bread, egg, bitter herbs, salt water, and charoset.  We discuss what each represents to the Jewish people.
Throughout the meal beautiful English translations of the blessings are said from a Haggahah book.  For example when we were searching for the mini-cake we said : "Blessed are You, Eternal One, Our God, Sovereign of all worlds, who has sanctified us through the commandments, commanding us to remove all hametz."   (hametz means leavened bread)
When the students drink grape juice, they lean to the left.
They lean to the left to show they are no longer slaves but royalty.  They are the Children of God.  In ancient days, the Kings had pillows on their left side that they reclined on while they ate and drank.
I heard so many say this is my "favorite part of religion".  They love experiencing what Jesus did and serving as He did.  All the seder meal items are provided and prepared by the students and their families.    It's a blessing for each of us!
