EMBS Digital Media Ambassador
Transforming EMBS Social Media
My name is Khanita and I'm a Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Engineering (International Program) from Chiang Mai University, Thailand. I'm also a clinical pharmacist.

It's my pleasure to have an opportunity to work with the EMBS team in New Jersey. My assignment is to help improve the engagement rates amongst EMBS social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. It' been an interesting and unique challenge for me to run online campaigns and try to get more people to participate in our online activities.

As an EMBS member living on another side of the world, I know what kind of response I would want to get, what type of online activities worldwide members can participate in, and what type of media could capture more audience attention.
I'm here to make sure that everyone can feel that they are part of EMBS and that they can contribute to EMBS, and I'm going to make sure that EMBS is here to support you. #IAMEMB

EMBC 2018
1 Page Research Poster Paper DEADLINE is April 18, 2018
1 Page Research Posters
At least one author of the paper must be registered at the appropriate full conference rate (Member, Non-member, Student member, Student non-member) in order to upload the final paper. If complete payment of a registration fee is not received, authors will not be able to proceed with uploading their final manuscript. While any author of the paper may be registered, only the designated "corresponding author" may upload the final paper. Once a manuscript has been uploaded, the registration fees cannot be refunded. Please be sure that the attending author completes payment and uploads the final paper. This means that they must be the "corresponding author".

Q&A with Dr. Emery Brown, IEEE Fellow
Episode 3 of the IEEE Brain Initiative Podcast Series Now Available
Over 60,000 people in the United States undergo anesthesia every day which makes Dr. Emery Brown's research on the effects of anesthesia on the brain pertinent and relevant in today's world.

Not only is Dr. Brown a Professor of Computational Neuroscience and Medical Engineering at MIT, Professor of Anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and at Harvard Medical School, and a practicing anesthesiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, he is also an IEEE Fellow and member of the IEEE EMBS Scientific Advisory Board. In this IEEE Brain podcast episode, Dr. Brown shares how he started working in this field, his goals in researching anesthesia, how IEEE is contributing to understanding the brain and much more.

Apply now for the 13th IEEE-EMBS International Summer School on Biomedical Imaging,14-22 June 2018, Saint-Jacut de la Mer, Emerald Coast, Brittany, France
 Chairs: Christian Roux, Elsa Angelini,
Jean-Christophe Olivo-Marin, Jean-Louis Coatrieux

Founded in 1994, the IEEE EMBS International Summer School on Biomedical Imaging - EMBS flagship summer school - has become over the year the worldwide reference in the field and is proud of his 500 alumni.

It is resolutely international (around 45 participants from more than twenty countries have participated to the previous editions) and accessible to young scientists. It is an open yet privileged place for exchanges and discussions of major on-going work. Informal and warm, at a location where the sea and the land merge in a time varying relation, this school brings together, every other year for ten days, the world's greatest researchers and teachers in biomedical imaging. The participants are PhDs, post-doctoral students, engineers from industry, and already involved in some area of biomedical imaging.

Automated Insulin Delivery
TAKING THE GUESSWORK OUT OF DIABETES MANAGEMENT
For individuals with Type 1 or insulin-requiring Type 2 diabetes, new technology may offer something they desperately need: the ability to maintain ideal blood glucose levels all day, every day. One problem is that glucose levels can fluctuate minute by minute, but patients only measure blood glucose levels a few times a day. However, technology developed by Bigfoot Biomedical aims to offer a simple and accessible insulin delivery and dosing system that takes some of the uncertainties out of diabetes management by using AI and machine learning algorithms, a smartphone app, and groundbreaking no-finger-stick glucose-monitoring technology

Remote, Depth-Based Lung Function Assessment
Vahid Soleimani ;  Majid Mirmehdi ;  Dima Damen ;  James Dodd ;  Sion Hannuna ;
Charles Sharp ;  Massimo Camplani ;  Jason Viner
The authors propose a remote, noninvasive approach to develop pulmonary function testing (PFT) using a depth sensor.  After generating a point cloud from scene depth values, they constructed a three-dimensional model of the subject's chest. Then, by estimating the chest volume variation throughout a sequence, they generated volume-time and flow-time data for two prevalent spirometry tests: forced vital capacity (FVC) and slow vital capacity (SVC). Tidal volume and main effort sections of volume- time data were analyzed and calibrated separately to remove the effects of a subject's torso motion. After automatic extraction of key points from the volume-time and flow- time curves, seven FVC (FVC, FEV1, PEF, FEF25%, FEF50%, FEF75%, and FEF25-75%) and four SVC measures (VC, IC, TV, and ERV) are computed and then validated against measures from a spirometer.

A dataset of 85 patients (529 sequences in total), attending respiratory outpatient service for spirometry, was collected and used to evaluate the proposed method. Results: High correlation for FVC and SVC measures on intra-test and intra-subject measures between the proposed method and the spirometer. Conclusion: The proposed depth-based approach is able to remotely compute eleven clinical PFT measures, which gives highly accurate results when evaluated against a spirometer on a dataset comprising 85 patients. Significance: Experimental results computed over an unprecedented number of clinical patients confirm that chest surface motion is linearly related to the changes in volume of lungs, which establishes the potential toward an accurate, low-cost, and remote alternative to traditional cumbersome methods, such as spirometry.
