September 2013
Dear Friends,

As you know, FIRE has been helping people and changing lives for 15 years.

However, 2013 has been as year of struggle financially. We came up $3,425 short for our matching contribution deadline of September 6.  Our matching grantor has agree to extend the offer through September 27th.

This leaves us with just two more weeks to raise the remianing funds. We ask that you do what you can for FIRE. Below is an update that demonstrates how your contributions are turned into trans-formative action.

Warmest Regards,
The FIRE team

You still have a chance to make a difference in Mongolia by saving lives and preventing disease.

We need to raise $10,000 by Friday September 27th.
This will be matched 50% with $5,000. You can donate directly online here or you can mail a check to the address above. You can also donate with the purchase of a Kazakh Wall Hanging. All sales of wall hangings count towards the $10,000 we need to raise.

We still need $3,425 to reach our goal and you can help FIRE continue its 15 years of service and support to the people of Mongolia by providing medical equipment, medical waste management training, sanitation and hygiene support in schools, and much more! Please donate before the time runs out.
Training DVD Distribution

On August 27th, FIRE officers in Mongolia presented the State Secretary of the Ministry of Health with 1,700 DVDs to assist the training of health organizations and health care workers in proper waste management and health safety practices.

If you're interested (or if you want to hear some Mongolian), the health training video can be found on YouTube by following this link.

The donation of the DVDs is part of FIRE's continued efforts in Mongolia to combat the rampant problem of hepatitis. Mongolia has the world's third highest rate of hepatitis B and C, with 10-15% of the Mongolian population being infected, as well as the highest rate of liver cancer. Withnull health care facilities being the leading form of transmission, improved waste management training reduces the spread and transmission

of hepatitis.

This summer, the State Secretary of the Mongolian Ministry of Health, Mr. Jambal KHATANBAATAR thanked the FIRE project for our continued attention to the issue and 15 years of cooperation with the Ministry to improve health standards.
FIRE as a Featured Speaker

In 2008 the government of Mongolia and the Millennium Challenge Corporation entered into a 5-year contract for Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) assistance in Mongolia. MCA is a U.S. government program hosted by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) that provides aid to developing countries that implement economic and political reforms. By collaborating with the Mongolian government, the MCA aims to facilitate poverty reduction through economic growth in the country.

Since 2009, the Mongolian Ministry of Health (MoH), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA), and FIRE have been cooperating to improve health care waste management in Mongolia. Combined, the organizations have invested 1.3 billion MNT (more than $1 Million USD) into procuring medical and waste management equipment including autoclaves, bins, water distillers, sharp boxes, and needle burners.

FIRE's Medical Director, Dr. Munkhjargal, was a featured speaker at a workshop addressing the Environmental and Social Impacts Assessment of MCA Mongolia held on August 8th and 9th 2013 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Dr. Munkhjargal gave a presentation on sustainable medical waste management focusing on the legal environment of medical waste management in Mongolia, comparing the actual health care waste situation with the national standard, and the best health care and medical waste management practices. She also called attention to problematic issues and gave her recommendations for sustainable medical waste management.
Meet the New FIRE Intern!

Hello! My name is Astrid and I'm the new intern for the FIRE project. I'm currently a senior at Northern Arizona University pursuing a bachelor's degree in International Affairs. I'm hoping to go on to earn a Master's degree in Public Policy and Administration or International Relations and Diplomacy and I'm excited for the opportunity to work with FIRE and learn all about the ins and outs of a non-profit organization.

There are several directions within my field of study that I hope to explore before settling on a Master's program. I would love to work as a policy analyst for an internationally focused non-profit organization. Alternatively, I'd love to work in diplomatic policy-making and analysis.
