Youth Food Movement - Upstart Program opportunity

Upstart is the Youth Food Movement Australia's 18-week leadership program building the capacity of young people to be change makers in the world of food and agriculture. The program provides a cohort of young people (aged 18-35) across Australia with the opportunity to co-create real-world community food projects, and have a tangible impact on the food system around them.

It's  about giving young people the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to Australia's food future. You don't need rubber-stamped professional skills to start creating the kind of world you want to live in. Upstart welcomes young people who simply want to throw themselves in, meet awesome people, learn new skills, challenge themselves and learn more about how food reaches their plates.

Participants will receive a training Bootcamp, a project development night, online training and resources, group-organised learning opportunities, and hands-on experience in project design and delivery.

When: 5th May - 25th August

Cost: Full Fee - $185. Concession - $145

Joining millions around the world, the City of Marion is participating in Earth Hour to help raise awareness of climate change.

Council will be switching off all non-essential lights and electrical appliances on Saturday 24th March 2018 between 8:30pm and 9:30pm and calls on local businesses and residents to also make the switch.

The community is encouraged to go beyond the hour and adopt a long-term sustainable lifestyle taking measures such as switching off appliances when not in use, changing to solar power and reducing water usage.

These measures will strengthen the Resilient South program, an initiative of the cities of Marion, Holdfast Bay, Mitcham and Onkaparinga, which looks to see what we can do to tackle the challenges of climate change for businesses, communities and our environments.

Council has implemented energy efficiency improvements and installed 374kW of solar panels on 10 of Council's largest energy consuming buildings. Energy efficiency upgrades and solar panels will be install on a number of sporting clubrooms during 2018. We have also recently commenced a project to change 8,525 inefficient street lights to more efficient LED lighting; this will cut energy use by more than 75%.

People are advised to use common sense during Earth Hour such as keeping safety lighting on and be careful if using candles.

Twining Glycine

Glycine rubiginosa is a small perennial climbing herb that grows to shin high, the leaves occur in a leaflet of three, similar to clover!

The flowers are small  and mauve to purple in colour and flowering between July and November.

Glycine is related to the common soy bean and wild forms of glycine such as Glycine rubiginosa have been used to investigate and promote genes that show resistance to Glycine aphid a major pest of the soybean crop.

Glycine is also an important plant in our local native vegetation as it is a nectar food for butterflies, and provides habitat and food sources for many insect species, especially ants. Being a legume it also fixes atmospheric nitrogen into the soil making it available for use by other plants.

Within the City of Marion Glycine rubiginosa is found most commonly in our remnant vegetation within our coastal shrublands, but it would have formed a common component of the woodlands in the region as well.

It is a lovely showy plant to consider for incorporation into your garden.

Built to Perform - Living Building Conversations #13

Buildings can be designed to be energy efficient and intended to provide comfortable places to live and work, however whether the building performs as is intended during operation can be a grey area. Gaps in actual construction, quality assurance through construction and user behaviour can all be contributors to buildings using more energy than anticipated. There is a gaining focus within the development industry to address these gaps via testing & monitoring of buildings, improving quality checks throughout construction and improve user behaviour.

Join Living Building Conversation #13 for a discussion focused on the ways we ensure that our buildings are built to perform and ensure we live and work in efficient and comfortable places.

The Panel will be hosted by ASBN's Chairman Ken Long who will lead the discussion spanning the latest research and industry trends. Joining our expert panel for our upcoming Living Building Conversations is:

Mark Clayton - SUHO
Rachel Brdanovic - Tandem Energy
Dr Lyrian Daniel - University of Adelaide | Healthy Cities Research Group

When: Thursday 5 April, 6pm - 7:30pm

Where: Brickworks Adelaide, CBD Design Studio, 70 Hindmarsh Square, Adelaide.

Heatwave Survey - exploring your beliefs

Adelaide University has developed a heatwave survey that explores a number of beliefs about heatwaves, heatwave warnings and other messages. It is open to anyone 18 years and older, and is hosted on Survey Monkey.

The survey only takes around 6 minutes. We think it is the first attempt in Australia, at least, to measure attitudes towards heatwaves messaging and whether 'message fatigue' might be a phenomenon affecting the reception of these messages.

Creating Better Neighbourhoods - funding opportunity

How do we activate local communities to increase incidental interactions in our neighbourhoods?

The Innovation in Ageing Challenge is looking for teams with the smarts, energy and drive to create connected communities where older people can thrive.

Office for the Ageing is investing up to $100,000 in teams to work with older people to find new ways to foster 'neighbourliness' - encouraging incidental social interaction, building a sense of belonging, safety and inclusivity.

If you have a new idea or are developing a solution you want to take to the next level, we want to hear from you.

Gardening is a great way to bring people together and brings many health and wellbeing benefits.

Visit the Creating Better Neighbourhoods website for more details.

Recycling Market Development Grants

Green Industries SA have released a Recycling Market Development grant to build market confidence in recycled products, expanding a current market or market development for new products.

All kinds of new and innovative recycling enterprises have been popping up in hair salons and cafes. Ethical purchasing is predicted to exponentially increase in the near future (ref. Future Forecast Report 2018 by the Future Laboratory, London).

China's recent National Sword program places import restricitons on certain recyclable materials, which has impacted South Australian recycling businesses exporting materials such as scrap plastics, metals, paper, cardboard, and textiles into China.

This grants program is a response to this situation, in addition to recognising the need to assist businesses to invest in activities which will overcome market barriers to accepting products with recycled content.

Funding available $300,000 up to a maximum of $100,000 per applicant.

Applicants must be able to provide 50% matched funding. Non-financial (in-kind) contributions cannot be included.

Who is eligible? Local councils, industry associations and organisations that produce, manufacture, sell or promote South Australian recycled materials and/or recycled-content products. All applicants must be legally constituted entities and comply with all federal and state laws.

Visit the Green Industries SA website for more information.
