Short Notes
Guns don't kill people.

You've got a lot of people talking about getting these guns off the streets. The only problem with that is, there's 15 million of them out there already on the streets.
And then another problem is if you ban them, then you're going to create an underground market, and the gun collectors, you know, it's going to become more valuable." Shaq O'Neal

The legislature has been busy writing special bills on define and governing drones and extending the statute of limitation for sexual offenses.
2017 Senate Bill 590, 591, 592 and 593: Let townships, villages and cities incur more debt -
MCU opposes increased debt
as the State Constitution requires all units of government to balance their budgets.
MCU is the entity that co-authored Michigan's Tax Limitation Amendment. We believe this bill may cause violations of that Constitutional Amendment.
The only legislators in the House who opposed this are Democrat Robinson and  Republicans Reilly and Runestad. This will be MCU rated rolls calls.

2017 Senate Bill 637: Cap allowable fees for 'small cell wireless' systems - small cell wireless phone and internet systems. These systems reportedly place equipment on power  line poles and other existing infrastructure to provide cell phone access without needing towers.
The bill would cap the amount the state and local governments could charge for  zoning, permits and other fees.
This allows a spider web of additional communications in rights of way that were originally granted for electrical utilities alone. They have been  bastardized by phones, cable and lots of other sub-leasees, and this adds another grevious layer as it reduces our property rights.
Chris writes: It's taking away your public property rights. We need less regulation.
Jeanine writes: Michigan Senate Bill 637 (2017) will allow telecom to install a small cell or distributed antenna system (DAS) on new and existing utility poles in our rights of way  every 500 ft, installing new utility poles where necessary. They can add 10 ft to the poles with their equipment, with ground equipment up to 28 sq ft allowed (the size of a
refrigerator).
SB 637 would give away public property - taxpayer supported rights of way, to the already wealthy telecom industry. It would streamline the permitting process for  telecom, taking away county, township, city, village, district, and subdivision authority. It violates our fundamental property rights, and our right to be safe in our own homes.
In the Senate the only opposing votes were Colbeck, Shuitmaker and Marleau. Let's stop this in the House!

MCU is Watching and supporting Senate Bill 897: Impose work requirement on able-bodied Medicaid recipients (Mike Shirkey)

2018 House Bill 5702: Revise civil asset forfeiture procedures (Runestad) HB 5073 (Glenn), HB 5074 LaFave (prohibiting local governments from imposing forfeiture regulations).
While we see the wisdom  of some of this it does not address the key problem - government over-reach and "stealing" people's stuff, violating property rights.
We prefer  Rep. Lucido'sHouse Bill 4158 that prohibits civil asset forfeiture until conviction. Inquires of some of the other sponsiors have not provided an explanation why those bills are required if HB 4158 passes.

OFF FB
(What members are thinking)

Jennifer McArdle Knapp - Despite it being nearly impossible to find this information, thanks to google filters, 52% of women voted for Trump. Hillary just deemed those 52% unable
to think for themselves. This "pro-woman" candidate just labeled 52% of female voters (can we call them female, or is that offensive) dependent on a male relative, friend or boss to make their voting decisions.
I joke a lot about being offended, but this truly is offensive. I am an educated, informed, independent woman that knows many woman just like me. We are all able to make our own decisions without the help of a male, regardless of who we voted for. And that, Mrs. Clinton, is why you will never be President. You just don't get it.
Darrin Moore - How about instead of only attempting to reduce or stop something that can no more be abolished than human nature itself, we go back to doing what we did until
just a few decades ago and teach kids how to develop the inner strength to bear, handle, cope with, and prevent bullying instead of raising children who are too emotionally frail, too despondently resentful, too socially awkward, and too intellectually empty to make it in the real world?
We have taught kids to sheepishly run to the shepherding authorities whenever they have a grievance or their delicate sensitivities are offended instead of teaching them how to hunt down wolves themselves.
But most of all, let's stop treating bullying like the root of the problem rather than a symptom of a deeper malady. The kids most affected and at risk to succumbing to the horrific self-destructive or rampaging lashing out
impulses are kids who didn't know the love of an intact family or the love of God. Nobody told them that there are always going to be bullies and why people bully, just as there are always going to be sick, sad, and wicked people who are going spread suffering, or that our loving God turns even the bad things into good for those who believe and learn to suffer
with grace as he did.

Say no to COS, a true ConCon!
James Madison , author of the Constitution and co-author of the Federalist Papers was horrified to learn in 1788, just months after ratification of the Constitution, that New York and Virginia sought an Article V Convention. Madison wrote G.L. Turberville November 2, 1788:
If a General Convention were to take place for the avowed and sole purpose of revising the Constitution, it would naturally consider itself as having a greater latitude than the Congress...It would consequently give greater agitation to the public mind; an election into it would be courted by the most violent partisans on both sides... (and) would no doubt contain individuals of insidious views, who, under the mask of seeking alterations popular in some parts ... might have the dangerous opportunity of sapping the very foundations of the fabric.... Having witnessed the difficulties and dangers, which assembled under every propitious circumstance, I should tremble for the result of a second, meeting in the present temper in America."

++ Give financial assistance, not cash
Op-Ed by State Rep. John Reilly, R-Oakland, represents Michigan's 46th House district.
Michigan's state government distributes almost $90 million each year in what they openly call "cash assistance," where recipients are literally able to obtain cash from ATM machines from state-issued Bridge Cards.
How much of this taxpayer money is spent for its intended purpose? Because cash cannot be monitored once it is given out, much less controlled, we cannot know.
But here's a clue: In 2013, Michigan passed laws to prevent Bridge Cards from being used to obtain cash from ATMs located in casinos, strip clubs, and liquor stores. A state investigation found that a Michigan casino dispensed $87,000 from Bridge Cards.
We must acknowledge that giving out cash encourages misuse to any recipient suffering from addiction, and not all those on cash assistance are free of these crippling problems. For them, cash assistance is not only wasteful but hurtful.
That's why as individuals we don't give strangers cash. Not because we are not charitable, not because we don't care, but because we genuinely and rightly worry that we're actually doing harm instead of good.
It's also wrong to taxpayers, not all of whom are well-to-do, to so recklessly give away their hard-earned money.
It's time we reform our cash assistance program to ensure that our dollars actually do provide assistance. That is how we genuinely empower those in need.   Article

MICHIGAN CONSERVATIVE UNION
STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES

We believe that God is the source of all legitimate power, that He has instituted civil government for His own glory and the good of man, and that the Word of God is the supreme law and rule in government as in all other things. We believe that all governments are responsible to God, and that all governments are obligated to legislate in conformity with the Word of God.

We believe that the Constitution of the United States is the best political charter yet created by men for governing themselves. It is our belief that the Constitution is designed to guarantee the free exercise of the inherent rights of the individual through strict limitations on the power and authority of the Federal Government.

We reaffirm our belief in the Declaration of Independence, and in particular, the belief that our inherent rights are endowed by the Creator. We further believe that our liberties can remain secure only if government is so limited that it cannot infringe upon those rights.

We believe that the free market is the only economic system of our time that is compatible with political liberty. It has not only brought a higher standard of living to a greater number of people than has any other economic system in the history of mankind; more important, it has been a decisive instrument in preserving freedom through maintaining private control of economic power and thus limiting the power of government.

We believe that collectivism and a free market are incompatible, and that when government competes with or interferes with the free market, it jeopardizes the natural economic growth of our society and the well-being and freedom of the citizenry.

We believe that "eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." We therefore believe that effective armed services are necessary for the defense of our national security and as a deterrent to potential aggressors. We believe that the use of force beyond our borders should be done only with clear, well-defined objectives and only in the cause of political liberty. We strongly disavow all movements toward unilateral disarmament as based on naive views of the intentions of other world leaders.

We believe that it is the responsibility of the individual citizen, whenever his inherent rights are threatened from within or without, to join together with other individuals to protect these rights, or when they have been temporarily lost, to regain them.

We believe that any responsible conservative organization must conduct itself within the framework of the Constitution. In pursuance of this belief we refuse to countenance any actions which conflict in any way with the traditions of the American political system.

The Michigan Conservative Union is created to realize these ends through the cooperation in responsible political action of all Americans who cherish the principles upon which the Republic was founded.

The Michigan Conservative Union will welcome all Americans who are prepared to fight for the realization and preservations of these principles through political action at the local, state and national level.   www.mcu.today
