Why the Dramatic Increase in Cosmetic Treatments Among Men and Seniors?
"Why Does Grandpa Look Younger?"

Demand among men for nonsurgical cosmetic treatments has gone up 74% since 2000, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgery's 2016 Statistics Report, and the number of treatments among people over 65, has more than doubled in the last twenty years.
Women under 65 have always been enthused about aesthetic treatments but why are men and seniors suddenly opting for them?

One of the main reasons for the rapid growth in cosmetic treatments is due to people remaining healthier and more active longer than in previous generations. They  want to look as young on the outside as they feel on the inside.

"I'm 60 and I remember when my grandfather and grandmother were 60 and it was like they had a foot on a banana peel and the other in the grave - and now (people their age) are skiing," said Dan Mills, president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Age discrimination in the workplace is also one of the main reasons people venture into a cosmetic medical practice. More Americans over the age of 65 are working today than at any other time in the last century, and they don't want to look obsolete.

As one 54-year-old portfolio manager was quoted, "People do tend to look at external appearance. When your clients think you are younger, they think you are more savvy with technology and social media."  No one wants to feel like they're the "old man or woman" socially, or in the workplace

Initially, men have been slower to embrace age-defying treatments and would only do those with minimal downtime. They never c ame in together with friends for their procedure. As Dr. Dubrow from "Botched" put it when asked about how men act in a cosmetic office,  "[Men would] rather be caught bra shopping or buying condoms."

Women, who have often been open about their love for  c osmetic treatments from the time of Cleopatra, rarely have any qualms abou t ad mitting they've had "work done".

Jean Stark, 83, from Lakewood, CO, has had a previous eyelid treatment and is planning further procedures soon to her neck and jaw.  As she says,  "If you look in the mirror and you don't like the way you look, if you can improve yourself, why not? What in the world have I got to lose? If I drop dead the next day, at least the undertaker will have a good face to look at."

The most popular treatments for men include  Botox to relax frown and forehead wrinkles,  dermal fillers to restore youthful facial proportions and enhance the look of a strong jaw and chin,  CoolSculpting to reduce love handles and abdominal fat, Profractional Laser ResurfacingLaser Hair Removal, and Laser Tattoo Reduction.

For people 60 and above, of either sex, the most popular anti-aging treatments are dermal fillers to provide a "Liquid Facelift" or rejuvenate hands,  IPL to remove age spots and any or all of the collagen stimulating treatments listed in the "Fixes for Crepey Skin" article below.

Fixes for Crepey Skin
Feeling thin-skinned? Well toughen up!

What causes the papery, crinkled skin we refer to as "crepey"?

Human skin thickness decreases at an average rate of 6% per decade. Crepey skin results from the loss of both collagen and elastin, which together determine the firmness and shape of the skin.

Elastin is the protein in the skin that makes it elastic. When we're young, our skin has enough elastin to return back to it's normal position after it's stretched. With age, less elastin is produced and like a rubber band that's been stretched repeatedly, the skin loses its ability to bounce back.
Kninkles (knee wrinkles) - an example of lost elasticity

Collagen, which accounts for about 30% of the protein in our body, provides the scaffolding for our skin, bones, muscles and tendons.  There are 28 types  of collagen, but collagen types 1 and 3 are predominantly found in the skin. Collagen  molecules are packed together to form long, thin fibrils and type 1 fibers are particularly capable of being stretched.

Besides aging, what else speeds up the loss of collagen and/or elastin?
  • High sugar consumption or inflammation
  • UV radiation from sunlight
  • Smoking
  • Aging
  • Some autoimmune disorders
  • Long-term use of certain medications like prednisone
  • Low estrogen levels
Treatments that can improve and/or increase the skin's collagen and elastin quality, usually require several to produce visible results. Here are some of the most effective treatments, in ascending order of degree of improvement (in my opinion):
  • Radiofrequency
  • IPL
  • Microneedling- Skin treated with 4 microneedling sessions 1 month apart shows up to 400% increase in collagen and elastin levels at 6 months post-treatment
  • Fractionated laser resurfacing like our Profractional
  • Radiofrequency delivered below the skin's surface through microneedles, like the Infini RF Microneedling treatment (which we don't have yet but it is available at the practice of Dr. Robert Rehnke)

Some of the most effective topical ingredients and products that can increase the skin's collagen and/or elastin:
    • Peptides such as Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 amino acid, which is known to boost collagen. Products at Skinspirations that contain significant amounts of this peptide include SkinMedica's TNS Essential Serum ($281 for 1 oz) and Revision's Nectifirm ($73 for 1.7 oz)
    • Retinoids such as retinol and tretinoin, increase both elastin and collagen. Some of our most effective retinoid products are SkinMedica's Retinol and Obagi Tretinoin (both available in several concentrations)
    • Vitamin C both increases collagen and repairs sun damage but needs to be in a stable form to remain active. One of the most stable, non-irritating forms of Vitamin C is sodium ascorbyl phosphate, which is the form found in Obagi Professional-C Serum (1 oz in 10,15,or 20%), available at Skinspirations.
    • Glycolic acid is both an exfoliant and increases collagen. Two glycolic acid products we carry are Glycolix Elite Treatment Pads (10, 15 or 20%, ranging from $26.50 $31.50 for 60 pads) and Obagi Exfoderm (2oz for $74).
    • Niacinamide enhances collagen and elastin while providing an anti-inflammatory effect that slows down aging. NIA24 Skin Strengthening Complex (1.7 oz for $93) is one of the best niacinamide products available.
Through August 31, 2017, get a free jar of 60 Glycolix Elite pads with the purchase of a Radiofrequency or IPL Photofacial treatment package.

SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator
Worth the hype?
by aesthetician, Melissa Kennow

As aestheticians it's our job to try out new skincare products.

Tough job, right?

Most of the time after the initial appeal of the pretty packaging or the clever marketing has subsided, these products are relegated to the back of my cabinet or "gifted" to various friends & family. It's rare that one comes along that is truly worth all the hype & becomes a permanent fixture in my skin care routine.

SkinMedica's HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator is one that has really lived lived up to its claims. I've been using it consistently for about a year & have clearly noticed the improvement in my skin.

As your skin ages, its natural levels of hyaluronic acid (HA) decrease & it loses the ability to retain proper hydration; therefore becoming rougher & dryer. This leads to an increase in the appearance of lines & wrinkles that make skin look older.

Be The Grape!
grape to raisin
Think of your skin as a grape - all nice & plump (full of water) that over time becomes a raisin - all shriveled & wrinkly (lacking water).

To be the grape, your skin must be able to retain water in its cells. Hyaluronic acid does just that. This little molecule can hold up to 1000 x's its weight in water & when applied topically hydrates the skin by helping it to hold on to water.

Why I love it

A serum containing hyaluronic acid is essential in a good anti-aging skin care regimen & believe me I've tried my fair share. SkinMedica's HA5 is by far the best. Most other HA serums contain one type of hyaluronic acid, only capable of holding moisture in the outermost layers of the skin. HA5 is the only serum to combine 5 different types of hyaluronic acid (of varying size & weight) to continuously create hydration throughout multiple layers of skin.

What really takes this product to another level is the antioxidant & peptide blend that restores your skin's ability to maintain its own hyaluronic acid levels. So you're not just receiving the temporary benefits of hyaluronic acid but also providing your skin with the tools it needs long term to maintain its water holding capacity for younger looking skin.

Immediately after applying HA5 I notice that my skin is smoother & my fine lines are less noticeable. The silky-smooth texture also primes my skin in the morning before applying my makeup. Over time I have noticed that my skin texture is softer & overall my skin is soothed (less prone to redness & irritation) & more hydrated.

How I use it

After cleansing, toning & using any of my active products (ie. Retinol, Vitamin C, Hydroquinone, AHA's/BHA's) & allowing them 15-20 minutes to set I will mist all over with my glo Cyto-luxe facial mist (allowing it a few seconds to absorb) before I apply one pump of HA5. The moisture left from the mist allows the HA5 to really spread all over & locks in those nourishing ingredients.

You can (and should) apply HA5 directly under & around your eyes. It will help to smooth crow's feet & improve the crepey skin texture there.

The airless pump dispenses a very generous amount of product & one pump provides adequate coverage for the face & neck. As tested by our aesthetician, Donna Monette, a bottle will last 3 months if you use the recommended one pump in the morning & one pump in the evening.
