I’m writing this on Wednesday morning, giddy with excitement about the next five days of rockin’ and rollin’ all over town. After 22 years of Snowdowns, I still can’t believe just how much fun this crazy event is. I love any excuse to get into costume, so being able to dress up for almost a week is a dream come true. And we get to do it every year!
This year, I’m feeling more well-prepared than ever. For one thing, I’ve been flipping through most of our Music Biography section to buff up on fun facts that I can later blurt out at odd times. Did you know, for example, that Black Sabbath’s “Behind the Wall of Sleep” was inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s short story of the same name? Or that Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, of Led Zeppelin, were committed Lord of the Rings fans, and incorporated extensive references to Tolkien's works throughout their songs? And if you haven’t read Prince’s recent, posthumously published autobiography,
Beautiful Ones, I can’t recommend it enough.
I’ve also made sure to read and annotate the full Snowdown schedule to make the most of every minute. Of course, all that planning will go by the wayside as the week goes on, but it's all part of the fun. If you’re making your schedule for the week as well, be sure to circle the
Book Geek Games here at Maria’s on Saturday from 12-1 p.m. We’ll have teams of two competing in literary challenges including speed alphabetizing, book balancing obstacle courses, book stacking, and literary trivia (hint, hint! Commit those fun facts above to memory).
I hope to see you all here on Saturday, and in the parade, and on the broomball rink and the dodgeball court.
