Department Convention Planning 101
How To Write A Resolution

National President
Cheryl Perez
Since starting the Zoom monthly video/telephone meetings last year under PNP Diane Petrini's term, we have been using them as a way to bring information through presentations, discussions and guest speakers that we believe will benefit our members. This month we are trying something new: a Department Convention Planning Presentation that includes how to write a Resolution to submit to the National Convention for Bylaw amendments. This will be informative to not only the Department Officers, but Unit Officers as well. We hope to see you on the Zoom meeting! A few other items to note:

Website Update: The MOPHA website has made a change to how and where we access our website. You can now find us at www.PurpleHeartAuxiliary.org or from the MOPH website by clicking on partner organizations and then the Auxiliary logo.

Department Conventions: Department Presidents or Secretaries, please send us your annual convention information as soon as available. Your National Leadership Team is looking forward to attending as many Department Conventions as possible.

Unit Elections: As stated in our bylaws (Article III, Section 4- Elections), Unit elections are held in April. The March meeting agenda should include nominations for the election meeting. Sometimes it is difficult to fill every elected and appointed position on the Installation Report. If your Unit is experiencing that, please contact either me or SVP Amanda Flener and we can help you with prioritizing positions that need to be filled.

Annual Reports Update: We have received very good feedback on the deceased member report and Inspection Report that can be filled in and submitted via an online form. We are working to have the History/Americanism/Publicity annual report filed online too and it should be available by the end of this month. With the online filing, you just answer the questions, hit submit and your report is filed with the appropriate National Officers. Paper versions will also be available. The rest of the annual reports and filing procedure will remain the same as in past years.

As always, if there is anything your National Officers can be of assistance with, please don't hesitate to contact us.

NEW Inspection Form - Presidents, We have a new Inspection Form with updated questions designed to give us more information about a Unit and how it functions. These new questions will give us a better idea of the health of Units. I want to give a shout out to the ladies who helped beta test this form and give us feedback. Barbara Hale-Ray, Terri Shattuck, and Sandy Cross each helped in getting Unit inspections complete and working through the testing process. Let me know if you have questions. Remember. A member can not inspect her own Unit. Presidents inspect the Units in their jurisdiction. (Department President inspects her Units, Region President inspects Units without a Department in her Region). Terri suggested that you print the paper form for your records while you are asking the questions online. The online form automatically submits to me and sends a copy to your email.

February is full of celebrations; especially for those who live in New Orleans like me (Mardi Gras is February 25 th this year). Holidays like Valentines’ Day and Groundhog Day, are fun and festive. February even hosts a “National Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day” (totally serious, friends.) But as an Auxiliary, the most important February holiday is President’s Day when many of our Departments and Units celebrate George Washington’s birthday. It is because of General Washington that our Auxiliary exists today. After all, without General Washington, there would be no Purple Heart.

It is important that we continue to share his legacy and educate others about what a Purple Heart Medal means and symbolizes. Perhaps talk to social groups or a ROTC class, have a birthday celebration at a meeting and invite the media, or even write an article for your local newspaper. Whatever it may be, celebrate General Washington’s birthday with the knowledge that he pathed the path to recognize our Patriots’ bravery and loyalty.
I look forward to hearing about the ways your units celebrated.

A MONTH OF UNENDING LOVE - February is believed to be the month of love due to the fact that we observe Valentine’s Day, a day in which we celebrate love and affection. It is also the birthday of two great presidents who both had a great love not only for their family and loved ones but for the whole country. The things that they stood for during their lifetime is proof of this statement.

Abraham Lincoln our sixteenth President who was our Commander and Chief during the Civil War . To keep the country united and to stop slavery in January 1863 he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves. George Washington was the first President of the United States. He was also a general wh o led the military to victory during this country’s fight for independence. In 1782 he designated the creation of the Badge of Military Merit, which was later renamed The Purple Heart Medal which is to be awarded to members of the Armed Forces who are wounded in defense of this country.
When you think of all the aforementioned celebrations whether Valentine’s Day when we celebrate our love for family and loved ones; or celebrating the birthdays of two great Presidents whose lives exhibited how much they loved this entire country. You can’t forget the greatest love of all. The love that God has for each of us, He sent his Son to die on the cross so that we could each have the right to eternal life. There is no greater love. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.I challenge each of us to remember his love and to practice love toward one another in our daily lives.
BLESSINGS TO EACH OF YOU.

FEBRUARY'S SPOTLIGHT:
REGION II

Memory is a gift…A time to reflect on the last year events, many celebrations, on those beloved friends and family members who are no longer with us, thanksgiving gatherings, and remembering the birth of our Lord and Savior. Another New Year is upon us. A time to build new memories, to have new visions for the MOPHA, and new hopes for the New Year.

Last year may have been a difficult year for some, you may have only been able to put one foot in front of the other, or you may have run a great race and won the course. It took strength and courage to do both and still we were able to move forward. We have a New Year with new hopes and new goals to set before us. Take ahold, stand fast, continue to run the race even if it is one step at a time. Our steps together are stronger.

Where there is hope, there is a light ahead for a brighter future in this New Year.
This year will bring many more enjoyable conversations with Region 2. God bless you as you continue to serve our beloved veterans and those who come alongside them daily.

In Remembrance...Many of you may remember seeing this lovely lady at many of our National Conventions. Her name was Mary Lou Murphy she was the sister of Past National Commander Leonard Carlton (1990) who was the husband of our Past National President Sharon Carlton (1985-1986).Mary was a past President of unit 8 in Minnesota; she received her wings on December 30, 2019. We thank God for allowing us to know this family and for their willingness to serve this great organization.
