Second AHP Regional Workshop a Success
Scott Moore Shares Tips on Visual Storytelling
American Horse Publications held its second regional workshop Oct. 7 in Lexington, Kentucky. Award-winning videographer Scott Moore shared tips for visual storytelling.

Workshop attendee Tori Bilas of the United States Hunter Jumper Association highlights the top take-aways.

  1. Use natural sound, music or silence to create a transition.
  2. Always show an establishing shot early in the process to let the audience know your location.
  3. Use a tripod to stabilize the camera and easily change angles.
  4. Capture wide, medium and tight shots of everything you film for the most engaging options.
  5. Leave space between the interviewer and interviewee, and the interviewee and the background. This allows the background to fade, which is more intriguing to viewers.
  6. Conduct interviews in the shade when possible and control outside sounds the best you can. That might mean waiting until an airplane or car passes by, or asking someone to turn off any background noise while you are filming.
  7. Control your light for the most compelling film. For example, move closer to windows for natural light or use artificial light in your favor.
  8. Plan an ending with a call to answer, telling the viewer what you want them to do next.
  9. Make your composition interesting and compelling, because it's crucial to storytelling.
