Reminder: Update Your Syllabus for New Library and Success Services Locations
As of April 2, 2018 the Library, Writing Center, Tutoring Center, and Success Services are now located in Building F. Please update your syllabi for future semesters to reflect the new locations. The Harper College Syllabus Template and all related resources on the Harper College Syllabus webpage have been updated to reflect these location changes.

Creating an Accessible Learning Environment for Students with Disabilities (GEC)
In this course, participants will have an opportunity to learn basic information about the 10 most common visible and invisible disabilities, in order to evaluate a course or program and develop methods that make the learning environment inclusive and welcoming to all students, including students with disabilities. The course will utilize real case studies of current and past Harper students, in order to have an honest discussion about the challenges that students face when navigating an inaccessible learning environment.

New Service: Video Captioning
Providing captions and transcription of course-related videos is one way to help create an equitable learning environment for all students. While captions and transcripts provide obvious benefits to Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, a study conducted by the Oregon State University E-campus Research Unit found that 54% of students (independent of hearing ability) used closed captions at least some of the time when they were provided for course-related video. Of these students, roughly 90% of students who used closed captions found them to be at least moderately helpful.
Access & Disability Services provides in-class speech-to-text captioning and video captioning as part of their disability and accommodation services. The Academy is complementing this critical service by supporting captioning and transcription for online videos ahead of an accommodation request. This effort seeks to help faculty move their courses towards complete accessibility while also providing universal benefits for all learners.

The Adjunct Faculty Teaching & Learning Conference is a great way for all adjunct faculty to connect with Harper College, colleagues, and the Academy. This year's conference will include presentations and activities related to the student experience and student success at Harper as well as networking opportunities, food, giveaways, resources, and more. It Takes Two: The Advisor/Counselor and You

With emails pouring in by the dozens each day, and sometimes hour, faculty have to respond to the most urgent emails first, and others may never make it to the top of the list. One email that may be left behind is the reminder to complete Starfish progress surveys. A look at the most recent report will encourage those who have been active with the program to continue to do so and will hopefully convince those of us who may not report to Starfish as often as we'd like to make it a priority.
Each year, Student Development asks Institutional Research to look at persistence rates from Fall to Spring to determine if students who are flagged in Starfish and have that flag addressed reenroll from one semester to the next.
