Meet our Student Aides
The Academy is excited to introduce our wonderful new student aides:
- Dyrell Chatham
- Sowmya Ramakrishnan
Dyrell is starting his second year at Harper in the fall and is studying Business Management. He would like to go into Public Relations and wants to work for a fashion magazine in the future. Sowmya is also starting her second year at Harper in the fall and is working toward her Information Systems degree. After Harper, she plans to earn a Masters in MIS or Business Administration.

Submit Your Video(s) for Captioning
Access & Disability Services provides in-class speech-to-text captioning and video captioning as part of their disability and accommodation services. The Academy is complementing this critical service by supporting captioning and transcription for online videos ahead of an accommodation request. This effort seeks to help faculty move their courses towards complete accessibility while also providing universal benefits for all learners.

New! Blackboard Drop-in Sessions
The Academy will be offering drop-in training and technical support in Blackboard on select Tuesdays (12 p.m. - 2 p.m.) and Thursdays (4 p.m. - 6 p.m.) during the Fall 2018 semester, facilitated by Karen Herold. Each session will begin with a short training on a specific topic, but feel free to bring any questions and issues you would like resolved. No registration required.

Teaching in the Fast Lane: One CoP's Experience Accelerating Basic Writing

At Harper, we can be a bit obsessed with speed. Most of us have been in a meeting or invited to work on an initiative wherein we "accelerate" something, be it time to degree, selection of a pathway, or completion of a course sequence.
In the English Department, we began to accelerate our developmental sequence six years ago, adopting a now-famous model from the Community College of Baltimore County: the Accelerated Learning Program, or ALP. Students who almost earned the Compass score for direct placement into credit-level English were mainstreamed into ENG 101 and given a supplemental hour of supportive instruction from their English instructor. The program was, as you might expect, put into place very quickly.

Coming Fall 2018: Communities of Practice "Action Plan-tasia"

Plan-tasia is a play on the classic Disney film
Fantasia
, which is comprised of eight short animations and a score of classical music meant to engage the imagination. The production of this 1940 masterpiece was a group undertaking in which teams of skilled artists collaborated to come up with creative, meaningful representations of dream-like visions. Similarly, Communities of Practice are meant to engage groups of skilled practitioners to generate and explore innovative ideas that would not be possible without synergy among the members. Action Planning is a creative group process that represents the magic of coming together to develop an intricate and inspiring plan for work that will invigorate and improve classroom practice. A Fantasia is a musical composition that is free form so that the artist can improvise in an unrestricted way, yet it often combines several familiar tunes and a variety of forms or styles. In a CoP, the members are free to experiment by implementing something new in their practice that builds on their combined experiences and varying approaches to student success.

Dr. Saundra McGuire, Director Emerita of the Center for Academic Success and retired Assistant Vice Chancellor and Professor of Chemistry at Louisiana State University.
This year's event will include:
- Poster session featuring Communities of Practice at Harper
- Keynote address on metacognition & student learning
- Workshop on student motivation
- Breakout sessions presented by Harper faculty & staff
