What can faculty realistically do to support DACA/Undocumented-affected students in and out of the classroom?

In November's Board meeting, the Board passed a resolution of support of DREAMERS (young people that came to the United States before the age of 16 through no fault of their own) and urged Congress to act quickly to protect this population after the DACA program was suspended in September.

Faculty Retreat: Meet One of Our Featured Presenters
Dr. Jorge Argueta has served as a domestic violence and substance abuse counselor as well as a victim's advocate in addition to his role as an adjunct faculty member in Harper's Psychology department. Through his PechaKucha presentation (20 slides x 20 seconds), Dr. Argueta will share his successes in engaging and retaining vulnerable students by sharing his approach to developing a keen awareness of their obstacles in the start of every course, creating inclusive teaching materials, making students participants in class retention efforts, and helping connect them with resources. Breathing Life into the Curriculum

Laura Smith, new faculty in Health Careers, came to the Academy at the start of the fall semester looking for ideas for how to go beyond presenting information in a typical PowerPoint format. We followed-up with her during finals week to hear about how things were going and it turns out she came up with a variety of ways to make things more interactive and lively and go way beyond a routine lecture.

As we recharge our batteries and get ready for a new semester, it's also time to think about how we can best help our students. Please join us during the Orientation Week sessions that focus on student learning!
  • Learn about the genesis of Harper College's Global Learning Outcomes, what they are, and how you can "globalize" your courses by integrating one or more GLO into your curriculum. (Wednesday, January 10)
  • Find out how to make connections between your course content and quantitative reasoning, even if you don't consider your course to be related to quantitative reasoning. (Wednesday, January 10)
