Interested in strategies to improve students' abilities to overcome their stuggles? You might want to join this new CoP!
New Community of Practice: Enhancing Grit, Promoting Growth Mindset, and Developing Metacognition
The purpose of this CoP is to facilitate a discussion about enhancing student learning through the understanding of Grit, Growth Intelligence Mindset, and the use of metacognitive strategies. Members will discuss various ways in which these concepts can enhance student learning and will develop applicable strategies for use in the classroom. An understanding of related research will enhance participants' approach to teaching.

Free Speech: The Debate
How do you support the seminal right to free speech when some voices express what you feel is hateful and harmful speech? College campuses across this nation are struggling to manage the challenges of creating an environment that allows us to respectfully hear all perspectives. Harper's award-winning Speech and Debate Team will tackle this intellectually and emotionally charged topic on Wednesday, February 28.
We invite you to join us and bring your classes to one of two sessions:
- What: Harper College Speech and Debate Team's "Free Speech: The Debate"
- Date: Wednesday, February 28
- Times: 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. and repeated 2 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.
- Location: Wojcik Amphitheater
RSVP requested by February 22
and is encouraged for faculty who may be bringing classes.
Professor Joshua Sunderbruch will moderate the debate that will also involve the audience.

Allyhood: Building Skills to Foster an Inclusive Work Environment
Join us as we explore our individual and collective privilege and learn how we can use our voice to create positive impacts. This workshop will begin with a brief overview of privilege and examine how privilege occurs across social group identities. You will also have the opportunity to discuss various case scenarios in small groups that focus on recognizing and learning ways to use our privilege to become more inclusive of others in the workplace.

Volunteer for Community Day
Harper College is opening our doors to celebrate our 50th anniversary. On Community Day, we invite you and our community to experience, learn, reconnect, and realize all that Harper has to offer.
We need your help! Volunteers are needed for two-hour shifts between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. for various positions such as:
- Check-in and welcome tables at events
- Guides for walking tours
- Greeters and wayfinding
All volunteers will receive training and a free 50th t-shirt.

Back by popular demand! To improve course dropout rates, Odessa College sought the common thread between courses with the greatest student success. They uncovered four simple practices that increase connection to students and promotes student success.
This workshop explores the "4 Connections" revealed in Odessa's research and explores practical methods and tools for applying them in your own classroom.

A New Focus on ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) in Higher Education

Every night, it seemed, I came home with a new and troubling story from a student experiencing hardships. More and more, I noticed, students used my office hours not to discuss comma splices, but to share personal troubles-significant ones, like wrestling with abuse and trauma. I can recall two stories in particular: one from a student who came in to discuss her writing and ended up discussing how she no longer had access to her meds when she was removed from her parents' health insurance and another from a student who recalled the time she was pushed in front of a bus because she is Muslim. Increasingly, I find that classroom conversations suddenly shift to discussing poor course performance and students' struggles to manage the pressures of work, family life, caretaking, chronic illnesses, or mental health issues. When I shared these experiences with colleagues, I found I was not alone. Several others had also observed an uptick in student stress, anxiety, and extreme barriers to learning.

Faculty Retreat: Meet One of Our Presenters, Maham Khan
Maham Khan teaches Fundamentals of Public Speaking, Introduction to Mass Communications, and Introduction to Journalism, and has been involved with Harper College since her days as an involved student serving as president of the Honors Society, captain of the Speech Team, and president of the Muslim Student Association. In the immediate wake of 9/11, Khan became a leader and interfaith activist on campus, working with student groups, faculty, and administration to help engage community dialogue and increase religious literacy.

CATs to the Rescue!
Do you ever wonder if your students are learning the material that was covered in class? Are some students giving you confused looks or blank stares? CATs to the rescue!
CATs, or Classroom Assessment Techniques, measure what students are learning in the midst of the teaching and learning process and provide feedback that you can use to guide improvements in class. CATs are formative assessments used to gather ongoing feedback to help improve student learning. CATs can help:
- Identify strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work.
- Recognize where students are struggling and quickly address problems.
