The Academy offers one-on-one consultations to all faculty members. Consultations are personalized to meet your needs, and are designed to assist you in addressing any classroom challenge or opportunity.
For example, an Academy representative can help you:
- Design or redesign a course or syllabus
- Add Open Educational Resources or Universal Design for Learning to your course
- Incorporate a new instructional technology tool
- Build or enhance an online or blended course
- Generate creative ideas for assignments, projects, and classroom activities
- Design assessments and rubrics for effective feedback to students

The most recently approved adjunct faculty agreement (2016-2021) included the creation of an Adjunct Faculty Engagement Program that supports and recognizes adjunct faculty who are involved in sustained professional development and college service.

Transitioning from Crocodoc to New Box View
As of January 15, Blackboard transitioned from Crocodoc to Box as its inline grading tool. New Box View offers several improvements over Crocodoc, including expanded support for new file types such as .pdf's. Inline grading will continue to work in your courses.

Deconstructing Gender
This workshop will provide an opportunity to examine how gender is conceptualized and functions on campus and in the larger social context. Facilitators will begin the session with a basic overview of gender terminology to increase understanding and support the proper usage of pronouns.
Participants will examine a variety of scenarios in order to reframe how we think, behave, and communicate in regards to socially constructed notions about gender. Join us for meaningful work on deconstructing gender toward creating a more inclusive culture on campus.

Diversity & Inclusion Dialogue Workshops
Harper is continuing to offer D & I Dialogue workshops to engage colleagues in courageous conversation around concepts such as inclusive/exclusive behaviors, bias, privilege, and unintended impacts of our communication styles, to name a few.
If you haven't participated in this workshop, now is your opportunity. Choose from one of three Part 1 introductory sessions scheduled in February and March. If you have already taken the workshop, take it to the next level with our new Part 2 sessions.

Faculty Retreat: Meet One of Our Presenters, Dr. Travaris Harris
Dr. Harris may share his passion for student development and advocacy as a dean now, but he served as a faculty counselor in Student Development at Harper for more than 11 years and coordinated the summer REACH Program serving at-risk students from underrepresented groups for 10 years. Dr. Harris was actively involved in the Faculty Senate and served in various leadership roles in the Center for Multicultural Learning, including the multicultural faculty fellowship program and success coaching initiatives. Dr. Harris has been instrumental in a multitude of innovative programs and student development courses as well as helping students navigate challenges related to personal issues, learning disabilities, educational planning, and academic probation, thus improving student success and persistence outcomes.

Five Recommendations for Engagement from South Suburban College Adjunct Faculty

Some of the best faculty development simply brings faculty together to share and synthesize ideas about how to enhance teaching and learning. During a January professional development session on Engagement Strategies for Equity based on Gloria Ladson-Billings' work on culturally relevant teaching, the adjunct faculty from South Suburban College discussed effective methods for engaging and supporting their students. The adjunct faculty participants explored the common conceptions and shared visions of culturally relevant educators, and examined a multitude of ways these notions manifest themselves in teaching dispositions and strategies. The SSC adjunct faculty had many recommendations to share which centered on five major themes.

Student Success through Global Learning Outcomes

As community college educators, we are charged with preparing our students to participate effectively in a global workforce. It is vital that our students be able to function in an interdependent, highly diverse, and fast-changing world, one that is increasingly marked by volatile differences. The implementation of Global Learning Outcomes across the diverse curricula of the community college, from traditional academic tracks to career and vocational programs, is the first step in meeting the charge of preparing students for these global realities.
You will no doubt be glad to know that the Office of International Education at Harper College has been hard at work addressing these challenges! Over the last two years, a group of faculty from across campus have researched, vetted, and adopted five Global Learning Outcomes (GLOs) through an open, inclusive, and interdisciplinary process. In collaboration with department chairs and program coordinators, we have also mapped the GLOs to many of the college's curricula. We are presently developing rubrics for each of the outcomes and will pilot an assessment of several this spring.
