"Gazprom" Reported Record Exports of Gas Because of the Cold Weather in Europe

Novinite.com, February 26, 2018: Over the past week, Gazprom has recorded absolute record-breaking gas exports thanks to the cold weather in Europe. The low temperatures and depleted stocks of European gas storage facilities at the end of winter led to an increase in gas prices on the spot market by more than 30%. The forecast for the new week is for more cold weather.
In addition to the immediate growth in exports, Gazprom may also benefit from reduced reserves with underground gas storage facilities, which will have a positive impact on the summer sales of the Russian monopoly, Kommersant notes.
Russia's state-owned Gazprom reported on Saturday the fourth consecutive day to an absolute maximum in daily gas exports to non-Commonwealth countries (CIS). The new historic record on February 24 is 655.2 million cubic meters. This is an increase of 2.4 million cubic meters compared to the previous record on 23 February, the gas holding company reported.  Read more...
Shell warns of liquefied natural gas shortage as LNG demand blows past expectations

CNBC.com, February 26, 2018:    Royal Dutch Shell says the world could be grappling with a shortage of liquefied natural gas within a decade due to underinvestment in new projects. The Anglo-Dutch energy giant issued the warning in its second annual LNG outlook, which reports on developments in the booming market for natural gas cooled to liquid form for export. Shell says the market for LNG grew by 29 million tons last year, 30 percent more than previously expected.  Trading in LNG reached 293 million tons in 2017, up from just 100 million tons at the turn of the century. At nearly 300 million tons, suppliers shipped enough LNG last year to power about 575 million homes, by Shell's count.  LNG is playing a growing role in the energy mix as nations around the world seek to mitigate the impacts of climate change. While natural gas is a carbon-emitting fossil fuel, it burns cleaner than coal and heating oil.
Shell's report is good news for an industry that will see a huge amount of LNG capacity come online in the next few years, including from the United States, where five LNG export terminals are expected to start up by the end of 2019.   Read more...

Russia overtakes China in gold reserves race to end US dollar dominance

Rt.com, February 26, 2018: The Central Bank of Russia (CBR) boosted its holdings of gold by almost 20 metric tons last month, with reserves reaching 1,857 tons. It has increased its holdings every month since March 2015.
Russia is now among the top five gold holders after surpassing China, which reportedly holds 1,843 tons. Over the last 15 years, Moscow and Beijing have been aggressively accumulating gold reserves to cut their dependence on the US dollar.
"Interestingly, both Russia and China publicize and promote their accumulations of gold and publicly refer to gold as a strategic monetary asset. They make no secret of this. But on the flipside, the US does the opposite, and constantly downplays the strategic role of gold," Singapore's BullionStar precious metals expert Ronan Manly told RT in December.   Read more...
S&P raises Russia's ratings to 'BBB-' with stable outlook

TASS.com, February 24, 2018: TASS, February 24. S&P Global Ratings has raised its credit ratings for Russia to 'BBB-' from 'BB+' with a stable outlook, the company said in a statement.  "Demonstrated commitment to conservative macroeconomic policies will likely keep Russia's external and fiscal balance sheets strong and, alongside the flexible exchange rate, will enable the economy to absorb shocks that could come from tighter sanctions or weaker commodity prices. Recent failures of a number of private banks have not undermined financial stability, and we see early signs of a lending recovery. We are therefore raising our foreign and local currency sovereign credit ratings on Russia to 'BBB-/A-3' and 'BBB/A-2', respectively," the statement says.  According to the agency, the upgrade reflects the track record of prudent policy response that has allowed the Russian economy to adjust to lower commodity prices and international sanctions.  Read more...
ADM buys Aston stake to enter Russian sweeteners market

Nastaq.com, March 1, 2018:  PARIS, March 1 (Reuters) - U.S. grains merchant Archer Daniels Midland Co has agreed to take a 50 percent stake in Russian agricultural group Aston's starch and sweeteners activities as it continues to boost its presence in the expanding food ingredient market. Chicago-based ADM, which buys, stores and ships commodity crops, has been trying to invest in higher-margin markets such as corn and wheat syrup to boost earnings in volatile commodity markets and squeezed margins due to low prices. It purchased French wheat-based starch and sweeteners producer Chamtor last year, after acquiring corn facilities in Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey and Morocco in 2015 and 2016.  Aston has two corn wet mills located southeast and east of Moscow and controls 15 percent of the country's starch and sweeteners market, a source close to the deal had earlier told Reuters. The financial terms of the deal, which is expected to close late in the second quarter of this year following a regulatory review, were not disclosed. The deal follows ADM's announcement on Monday it would launch an soybean crushing joint venture with Cargill in Egypt.  Read more...

The country has managed to capture more than half of the wheat market in recent years, becoming the world's biggest exporter of the grain, thanks to bumper harvests and attractive pricing, Bloomberg reports.
The exports are reportedly set to beat another record this season. Russia is expected to sell 36.6 million metric tons of wheat overseas, according to Moscow-based agriculture consultancy SovEcon and the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR). Nearly half of the world's nations purchase wheat from Russia, which has been improving yields year after year in an attempt to curb its dependence on agricultural imports. Tobacco market participants expect positive effect from product marking

Tass.com, February 27, 2018: MOSCOW, February 27. /TASS/. Tobacco industry experts expect to see a positive effect from the introduction of a product marking system, a pilot project started in January this year, experts told TASS.
According to the plans, in 2019 all tobacco products will have a digital code that carries data not only about the manufacturer, but also about the entire logistics chain from the assembly line to the points of sale. In the near future, as part of the pilot project, the first marked pack of cigarettes is expected to leave the assembly line.
"Taking into account expected significant decline of the turnover of illegal products when marking is implemented, costs will be fully justified," Vice President Corporate Affairs at Philip Morris International in Russia Sergey Slipchenko said.  According to senior manager of Japan Tobacco International (JTI) Sergey Golovko, digital marking can become an important tool in the fight against illegal tobacco products.  Read more...
