Health Center: Norovirus Update

On Feb. 20, we shared with you the information about a norovirus outbreak on the UW Oshkosh campus. In recent days, the number of norovirus self-reports on the UW Oshkosh campus has remained low.

University Officials remain encouraged by the small number of daily reports-and by the campus community's rapid response to this outbreak during the last three and half weeks.
The health and safety of our campus community is a top priority. In an effort to keep the campus community healthy once the virus has passed, disinfecting efforts continue across campus. The biggest personal defense against norovirus is personal hygiene, especially handwashing.

While self-reported numbers are on the decline, reporting still remains critical. Those with symptoms of norovirus, including vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps, should complete the self-reporting form, which can now be found on the Student Health Center website.

The campus community should continue to remain diligent in staying home if ill. It is important to remember individuals are still contagious for 48 hours after symptoms subside. Even if you feel well, do not return to class or work until after this 48-hour period. If experiencing a second round of symptoms, please contact the Student Health Center at studenthealth@uwosh.edu or (920) 424-2424.
Advising and Course Registration

March is the time to schedule an advising appointment -- students assigned to an advisor in the UARC can schedule online on our website.

Registration begins on Feb. 26. Seniors, honors students and some athletes are able to register the first week. Most First Year students register in April.

The last day to drop a 14-week course is March 14.
Financial Aid

The Financial Aid Office at UW Oshkosh is finishing its work in delivering financial aid to students for the current semester. Soon the office will turn its attention to processing financial aid for the 2018-19 academic year. The staff is busy reviewing verification forms, tax transcripts, and other documents as we prepare to package and send out financial aid awards around the middle of March. Now is a good time to ask your student to check their "To Do" list to see if Financial Aid is requesting anything from them. This helps to avoid any delays in receiving financial aid for next year.

Registration for summer classes has begun. Now is the time to for students to assess their graduation plan and see if taking classes in the summer can help them stay on track to complete their degree. If a student plans to use financial aid for summer classes, they will need to complete a summer application for financial aid. This will be available soon after we package financial aid for the upcoming school year. Students will need to be enrolled in six credits for summer if they plan to request student loan funding for their charges.

Did you know? Young adults between the ages of 18 to 24 spend nearly 30% of their monthly income just on debt repayment -- double the percentage spent in 1992. Normally, 10% of net income is a recommended amount for debt obligation according to The State of Financial Literacy in America. Students want to be mindful of what they borrow to pay for education expenses. Loans need to be repaid in the future, and it's helpful to borrow only what is needed and have a plan in place to repay those loans at a future date.

To help students manage their resources and financial aid, students can use the GradReady financial literacy tool available on the Financial Aid website. This tool helps students in learning more about budgeting precious resources, keeping track of student loan debt, to simulate various scenarios in repaying education loans. This powerful tool allows students to make informed decisions on their financial future. GradReady is a free resource to all UWO students and parents.

If you have any financial aid questions, we encourage you to contact the Financial Aid Office at (920) 424-3377 or via email at  fao@uwosh.edu. We are here to serve you.

Residence Life: Spring Break, Housing Requirement, Interim Housing, and End of Year Checkout

Spring Break
All residence halls remain open during Spring Break (March 17 to March 25). On Call staff are available daily through Front Desk hours are reduced.

If your student is coming home, Spring Break is a wonderful opportunity to move items from the student's room they may no longer need. Winter clothes, winter bedding, and other bulky (yet seldom used) items can be taken home to free up space in the room and make the end of the year departure process easier.

Housing Requirement
Room Sign-Up continues March 6, 7 and 8 for students with a completed housing application to select a room in any available residence hall. The housing application reopens Monday, March 26 through June 1 for current residence hall students to complete and select their space for the upcoming academic year.

As a reminder, freshmen and sophomores are required to live in the residence halls unless they are commuting from their parent's/legal guardian's permanent home within 45 miles of campus and complete a Commuter Card. Additionally, UWO will exempt anyone from the housing requirement if one or more of the following are true by the first day of a fall semester:
  • They have successfully earned at least 48 credits;
  • They are at least 21 years of age;
  • They have lived in a residence hall for four semesters;
  • They are married; or
  • They are a veteran.
UW Oshkosh enforces the UW System Board of Regents housing policy. Residence Life staff will follow up with students required to reside on campus in the upcoming academic year throughout the spring semester.

Spring Interim Housing
The Department of Residence Life is committed to providing students with a secure, clean and well-maintained residence hall environment. In order to continue this commitment and better prepare for the summer conference season, we need to begin the summer cleaning and repair projects during spring interim. We will be asking students remaining for the 3-week Spring Interim to move (consolidate) into different residence halls during spring interim.

We anticipate the following consolidation for Spring Interim:
  • All Taylor Hall residents will move to North Scott.
  • All Webster residents will move to Donner Hall.
  • All Stewart residents will move to Evans Hall.
  • All residents on select floors in North Scott will move within North Scott.
  • All residents on select wings in Fletcher Hall will move within Fletcher Hall.
Spring Interim Housing information was shared with students on March 1. Additional information will be shared in early April with students.

End of the Year Residence Hall Checkout
Students not enrolled in a Spring Interim course are expected to depart the residence halls within 24 hours of their last exam or no later than Saturday, May 12 at Noon. Students enrolled in a Spring Interim course are expected to depart the residence halls by 8:00pm on June 1.

Information regarding how to checkout of the residence hall and our sustainable move-out will be shared with students in April and May.
