From the Pastor
A New Year...
|
|
As we begin a new year there are so many reasons for hope.
Our Profile Committee is nearing completion with the process of creating our parish profile as we prepare to call a new rector. The work and spirit of this group give us even more reason for hope as our collective discernment brings to light what makes St. Augustine such a special part of Christ’s ministry in the Rocklin area. In the next stage of this process, the Applicant Review Committee will begin exploring through conversation and prayer who God may be drawing to St. Augustine to sustain and continue this parish’s mission.
Soon, I too will be in discernment about where God is calling me next. At the beginning of our transition process, one of the decisions I made was to serve as an interim pastor and not to be part of St. Augustine’s search process. So we will both be preparing for change this year. We can remember that the joy of growth can only follow from the discomfort of change, and if goodbyes are hard then it means we have shared much love in our time together, and that too is a source of hope.
At the end of this month we will hold our annual parish business meeting, where you’ll hear about the many ways we are using our people, our building and our budget to bring hope to our community. That same weekend, we’ll also work together to pack meals for Rise Against Hunger, an event where many of our neighbors choose to join us because being part of something bigger than ourselves is always a source of meaning and hope.
If you’re making resolutions this New Year’s Day, let one of them be to pray daily for the Church. Here we partner together to share our journey, to seek God’s wisdom and to serve in love. Here we meet the living Christ in mysteries of water and food. Here we find the warmth of the New Day’s light. May it fill our eyes with hope.
In love and service,
Fr. Tom+

Service Times
8 a.m. Sunday Service
This is a simple communion service without music using Rite II. The quiet service will appeal to some every week and to others occasionally as a quieter way to worship.
10 a.m. Sunday Service
The 10 a.m. service is supported by the St. Augustine Choir. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m., except on some Holy days and special occasions.

|
Centering Prayer
One of the themes that is emerging in our ongoing practice of Centering Prayer is the awareness that God just wants to spend time with us. In response to the enthusiasm growing around this feeling, our Centering Prayer gatherings are offered Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and Fridays at noon. We hope that you will join us and see how contemplation can enrich your own experience.

Join us for a four-part Lenten series beginning Tuesday, March 10
th exploring the book
Being Mortal. Author and physician Atul Gawande calls for a change in the way that medical professionals treat patients approaching the end of life. He recommends that instead of focusing on survival, practitioners should focus on enabling well-being.
If you would like to discuss these issues and how they might translate into your own life, please join us. Each week participants will read a few chapters of the book and then meet to explore questions posed by facilitator, the Rev. Maryellen Garnier RN.
The group will meet four Tuesdays: March 10

St. Augustine in Transition
Profile Committee Update
December 2019
|
|
Goals
- To develop a Parish Profile that tells the story of St. Augustine
- To encourage as much parish participation as possible in this process
- To celebrate our gifts and identify the needs and challenges of our parish
- To ground our work in the Holy Spirit
Goals in Motion
- The vestry has approved the Parish Profile. The document now goes to the Bishop's office for final approval. After the final approval, the Profile will be posted for prospective rector candidates to view and respond.
Transition Prayer
Prayer is at the center of our Transition Process. The Transition Prayer below grounds us in the Holy Spirit and guides our work as we prepare a document which reflects the spirit, the strengths, the challenges and the hopes and dreams of St. Augustine Church.
Lord of all, we give thanks for what you have done as we listen to hear what you are calling us to be and do. We pray for our priests, Tom and Maryellen, our Vestry, and the person who will answer our call. We humbly ask for the wisdom and patience this process involves. Keep the eyes of our souls open and the ears of our hearts tuned to you. We ask all these things in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen

Hosting Coffee Hour is Easy!
All of us enjoy Coffee Hour after church. However, we need more volunteers to sign up to provide snacks. It is easy! Find a partner to share the experience. Keep it simple.
Although occasionally those who host provide a generous offering, that is NOT the expectation. Snacks can be simple finger foods such as: cookies, crackers, cheese, chips, veggies, fruit . . . you get it. You will need about 100 pieces.
TIP: Check out the big box stores for large packages.
Come early to set up, stay late to clean up. You do not have to worry about coffee and tea as those are provided by the Hospitality Coffee person. Look for the sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center. Thank you for volunteering. If you have questions, please contact Camille Grabowski at:
camillegrabowski@gmail.com

Altar Flowers
We are ordering fresh flowers for the altar from the
Rocklin Flower Shop
on the corner of Stanford Ranch and Park Drive. If you wish to donate for altar flowers, please sign your name and the occasion (thanksgivings, memorial, anniversary, birthdays, etc.) on the sign-up sheet in the display rack near the office.
Please make checks payable to St. Augustine for $40 with ‘Altar Flowers’ in the memo line. Names of those giving flowers for special occasions will be acknowledged in the bulletin on the appropriate date.
Thank you.

For those new to the Episcopal tradition, the Vestry is the governing board for the congregation, and members serve three-year terms. There will be three Vestry vacancies for three-year terms beginning February 2020. The three candidates receiving the most votes will fill these seats. More information and nomination forms are available at the Welcome

Coming up is another opportunity for a fun, hands-on global outreach event...packing food for Rise Against Hunger. What often gets lost in all the fun, this is also a fundraising event. The more money that is donated will help purchase more food. The St. Augustine Outreach Ministry Team is funding a large number of the meals with a $3,000 grant. But your help is needed to make this a wonderful community endeavor. Every little bit helps, so please be generous.
One box of 36 bags is 216 meals – cost is $75 per box.
One box of nutritious meals will feed a child for a full school year!
How many children do you want to support?
Registration will be online this year. If you need assistance, there will be people available to help on Sundays in January to sign up and make donations. There is a link to register on our St. Augustine website. Don't wait! Do it now! Your gift will be tax-deductible for this year!
Thank you from the St. Augustine Outreach Ministry Team!

Outreach Ministry
In the spirit of our Church tradition, the mission of Outreach Ministry is to love others as God loves us. We do this by inviting participants into transformational experiences by serving those in need.
As we reflect on 2019, we are grateful for all who have contributed to the ability of Outreach Ministry to support the needs of our brothers and sisters near and far in various programs. Those programs include The Gathering Inn, (including monthly dinners), donations to Rise Against Hunger, Acres of Hope, Kairos Prison Ministry and The Center at St Matthew's.
We will be planning for 2020 and encourage those of you who feel a calling to put your Christianity into action by joining us. We meet on the first Sunday of the month after the 10 a.m. service. All are welcome to attend. Our next meeting is Sunday, January 5

The Gathering Inn Hosting Program
On Wednesday, December 11
th, we prepared our famous
Barrel Chicken as part of a hearty meal for approximately 67 guests from The Gathering Inn. To top off the meal, we served a homemade peppermint brownie and peppermint ice cream.
Once again, the meal here at St. Augustine was a great hit.
In celebration of the holiday season, the tables were decorated with Christmas ornaments and candy canes for all. Fred and Margie Buhler brought individual goodie bags full of Christmas treats for each of our guests. Thank you both for your thoughtfulness.
Our volunteers this month included a number of young family members from our congregation. They all chipped in to serve our guests from the food line as well as serve d
essert to the guests. Thanks to all who participated.
The Gathering Inn Ministry is an opportunity for members of St. Augustine to blend with our challenged neighbors and provide a
hearty hot meal and a safe place to sleep that is dry and warm.
We encourage anyone who may be interested in helping sustain this worthwhile cause to sign up on The Gathering Inn sheet at the Welcome Center or contact Janice or Rick Stenzel at:

The Gathering Inn Donations
|
|
The Gathering Inn is asking for cold weather gear for men and women. They continue to need women's underwear sizes 6, 7 & 8 (especially bras for women) and men's underwear in all sizes. There is also a need for men's and women's razors.
In addition, TGI continues to need High Energy detergent as well as bleach, bath towels, hand towels, wash cloths, fitted twin sheets and gently used pillows. TGI is also accepting men's and women's jeans.
Please place your donations in the grocery cart at the entry to Canterbury Hall. Every item is greatly appreciated. Beth Sulc will deliver the items to The Gathering Inn. If you have questions, please contact Beth at:
bethsulc@gmail.com
Thank you for your generosity!

The Gathering Inn
Christmas Donation
|
|
The Gathering Inn asked St. Augustine to assist in providing Christmas gifts for the 15 children from 10 families who are guests at TGI. In addition, they wanted to provide a festive Christmas dinner for the six recently housed families. A collaboration between the Daughters of the King, Brotherhood of St. Andrew and the Outreach Ministry made this happen.
The three groups contributed $1,350 to help these families and their children. Nathan Cox, TGI South Placer Operations Manager, suggested we purchase gift cards for each family. "Having their own gift cards gives them a sense of normalcy, and they can make good choices for their dinners and gifts," remarked Cox.
Gift cards were purchased at Walmart. TGI bussed the parents to Walmart to do their shopping. Cox sent a note of thanks saying, "This was an absolute blessing to those who have nothing right now. I believe it will remind them that they are not alone and still deserving of grace."

St. James Food Pantry Ministry
Thank you for your continued support of the Food Pantry in Lincoln run by St. James Episcopal Church. Sadly, the need has not diminished, and there has been a rise in younger families coming in due to shortages in their monthly budget for food.
Some of the most requested types of food are: tuna, chicken, either canned or pouches, rice, raw pinto beans, peanut butter, cereal and fruit type cups. The majority of the beneficiaries of this food are not homeless but do not have adequate income to afford nutritious food for a full month.
The grocery cart is located at the entrance to Canterbury Hall.
Your generosity is a blessing to many of our neighbors in Lincoln. Thank you,
Jim Quinney
Please make sure your items are not past the expiration date and are unopened.

December was a crazy busy month!
In Sunday School we used Godly play to learn all about the advent season. Our pageant will make so much more sense to the kiddos this year! We made our own advent wreath out of paper plates, rolled paper and fun glitter yellow fabric. Don't think we got any pictures of those but had fun making them.
The students made "get ready bags" as a reminder of the reason for the season. The children decorated a brown lunch bag and then went on a scavenger hunt for eight pieces of paper. Each paper had an act of service to do - for example "clean up your sibling's room."
We also made nativity scenes out of graham crackers, gum drops, candy canes, animal crackers and fruit by the foot. The scene included Joseph, Mary, Baby Jesus, a donkey, an angel, a shepherd and a magi. Turns out we did not have enough time to finish the nativity scenes, so the donkey, angel and shepherd were not included.
Jim Quinney saved the day and substituted for Kara and Natalie on December 15
th. Jim had the students read from the Children's Bible and then draw a nativity scene. Lastly, we studied the Fourth Sunday of advent and practiced for our pageant.
Thank you all for your support. It has been a fun 2019 and we look forward to 2020!

The Prayer Shawl ministry will take a break from formal meetings for a few months. However, members will continue to knit and crochet prayer shawls on their own.
There are shawls available if you would like to give one to a person in need. The shawls are presented with a beautiful card and a selection of prayers from the Book of Common Prayer. These prayer shawls are given to people who need to feel the love of God and the support of our congregation as they struggle with illness or life’s challenges.
Please contact Greer Nave if you need more information.
