Anatomy of an 8th Grade Classroom
|
|
The environment of each classroom is distinct. The elements of each classroom are purposeful - some serious, some scholarly, some practical, some beautiful, some playful. The space created within the walls of each classroom is meant to invite, to relax, to inspire, to allow for learning, to be a known harbor and a laboratory for discovery.

Historic Note:
Last spring WWS received a letter from a museum specialist at the Naval History and Heritage Command saying they were doing "much needed data clean-up" of their loan files. They wrote asking if we knew the whereabouts of a bell that was loaned to WWS in 1972 - they hoped that the bell had moved with us from Hearst Hall on the National Cathedral grounds to Bethesda in 1982.
Through the input of the hive, someone suggested that it might be the bell residing on top of a cabinet in the 8th grade room (upper right corner pictured above). Upon inspection we confirmed that was indeed the bell from the Navy - USS Lorikeet (MSCO-49), brass, with clapper, 12” high x 14” diameter, 54 lbs.
The bell has been with the school for nearly all of our 50 years, but very little is currently known about how or why it was acquired. If anyone reading this Bulletin knows more of the history, we would love to hear from you!

WWS Adult Education: Nancy Blanning on "Sensing the World and Building the Brain—Partners for Life"
TONIGHT! - Wednesday, January 15 at 7pm in the WWS Library
We commonly believe that human beings have five senses with which to perceive and understand the world. However, modern neurological research and Waldorf Education both tell us that we actually have and use twelve senses. The way we develop these twelve senses during childhood lays a foundation for all of our development for the rest of our lives.
This presentation by
Nancy Blanning (
Author, Teacher, and Co-Director of the Sunbridge Early Childhood Teacher Training Program) will offer a framework for understanding the twelve senses and how they develop as "partners" to lay the ground work for how we will live with each other in social, community life. Practical examples and suggestions of how we can encourage our children's healthy development will be shared.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Morning of Service Work
Monday, January 20 from 10am-12pm
As we have done in the past, we will gather for a morning of service on MLK Day 2020. All are welcome, but we need a few folks to
sign up for specific tasks
.
We will:
- create gifts for children at NIH including felt pencil toppers, tassel necklaces, tic-tac-toe games, notebooks, and felt pencil pouches
- pack snacks for Cup of Joe
- make Scarves for Operation Gratitude for our service men and women
- ...and More!
As your “admissions ticket”, please bring toiletries or infant supplies (diapers, wipes, etc.) for
NCCF
.
Please note that most activities are for children grade 1 and up.
If you are not able to attend, but would still like to make a monetary contribution toward the snacks for Cup of Joe, please

Thinking Diversity Coffee with the Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice - "Indigenous Voices"

The WWS Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice invites us to collectively
consider the importance of indigenous voices with our guest Elizabeth Rule.
Dr. Rule is an enrolled citizen of the Chickasaw Nation and an active voice on indigenous issues in the DC metro area. She serves as the Assistant Director of the AT&T Center for Indigenous Politics and Policy and is also a Postdoctoral Fellow in American Studies in the Critical Race, Gender, and Culture Studies Collaborative at American University. We are thrilled that Dr. Rule is our guest speaker and we hope to see you there.

Knights Basketball - On a Roll!
|
|
The HS girls basketball team defeated Sandy Spring yesterday by a score of 50-48. The team was lead by Seniors Lua Jawdat and Maria Sewall who helped the team overcome a ten point deficit.
The girls have won six games in a row and are now in first place in the PVAC South Division.
The HS boys team has won three games in a row and moved into a tie for second place in the PVAC South Division.
Both teams play at JDS on Wednesday January 22. The girls game is at 4:30 and boys at 6:00pm.
**Mark your calendars now for SENIOR NIGHT. January 31 @ Burke. Girls game at 5:00 and boys at 6:30pm. We will recognize our seniors on each team just before tipoff. Come out and support our teams if you can!

stands at the busy intersection of Americana, modern pop, and classical music. To experience TF3 live is to hear the various eras, styles, and traditions of Western music fold in on themselves and emerge anew.

Bonded by an uncommon blend of their instruments fused together with their voices, Nicolas “Nick” Kendall (violin, vocals),
Charles Yang (violin, vocals), and Ranaan Meyer (double bass, vocals) (as pictured above), have found a unique voice of expression to share with the world. TF3 is renowned for their charismatic performances in venues including Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, and The Royal Albert hall. They have collaborated with artists such as Ben Folds, Branford Marsalis, and Joshua Bell, and have premiered works by composers Chris Brubeck and Pulitzer Prize winners Jennifer Higdon and William Bolcom. former WWS Class teacher and the author of our book study join us for this morning of reflection and sharing on the principles of Waldorf education. This event is open to the public, and parents from Acorn Hill and Potomac Crescent are warmly invited.

Sitter Needed for 2.5 Year Old
We are looking for a sitter to spend a couple hours a week - Saturday mornings from about 9:00-12:30 to take care of our very fun and energetic 2.5 year old. If the weather is decent, we'd love for the time to be spent at the playground, walking on the nearby trail, library, etc. so I can prepare our home for the arrival of our second child in March. We'd love the sitter to begin as soon as January 4, 2020.
There may be some additional ad hoc evenings if that is of interest, but we'd love to begin with Saturdays. If you or anyone you know might be interested, please share this with them. We live behind Northwood High School in Silver Spring, MD.
