NEWS AROUND THE SCHOOL

MINDFUL U-For Strong Bodies-Focused Minds
School counselor, Diana Byron, was awarded a "mini-grant" from the Indiana School Social Work Association to bring Mindful U to Saint Pius X School third grade students. The weekly lessons begin with stretches and movements that are presented in a way that targets body awareness, motor coordination and calm focus, before beginning activities teaching mindfulness skills. Mindfulness lessons are based on the ”Paws B” curriculum, which is a secular, research-based program for classrooms that has been successful in bringing mindfulness to thousands of students with the documented benefits of increased ability to focus, self-calm, solve problems, and connect with others.
Night of Family Cooking
The HASA Faith Formation Committee sponsored a Night of Family Cooking on Tuesday, January 21. Families prepared six large pans of casseroles for residents of the Center for the Homeless. Fr. Nathan led the group in a special blessing over the prepared food and for the families who received the meals.
MUSIC AT SPX
Saint Pius X School is dedicated to providing as many opportunities in the humanities as possible for students. The music and band programs are a shining example of this dedication. A few recent successes that have resulted from the efforts of the programs are highlighted below.
SPX All-Region Band
Select students participated in the All-Region Band Concert in fall, 2019. Of 206 applicants across the region,105 were chosen including middle school students:

Sara Prokop
Rachel Luebke
Teddy Berente
Braedon Troy
Junior All-State Band Member
Seventh grade student, Rachel Luebke, auditioned on her Bass Clarinet for the Junior All-State Band. She was selected as one of the best clarinet players of all seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students in the state of Indiana. She attended a three-day event in Fort Wayne, which culminated in an unforgettable concert for the Indiana Music Educators Association Conference.
ATHLETICS AT SPX
The Saint Pius X Catholic School Athletic Program is an extension of the School’s mission to lead children to Christ through intellectual, spiritual, and physical growth. The athletic program is a form of youth ministry that allows children of all abilities and skills to come together and form important bonds, even lifelong relationships.

Celebrate the Feast of St. John Bosco!

To wrap up Catholic Schools Week, the HASA Faith Formation & Service Committee is hosting a special assembly to honor the feast day of St. John Bosco on Friday, January 31. St. John Bosco (often referred to as Don Bosco) lived in Italy during the 1800s, and dedicated his life to the physical, spiritual, and educational needs of children. This article, The Magic and Spirituality of St. John Bosco , highlights how he used his gift of simple magic tricks to engage young people & preach the Gospel. He is the patron saint of school children and magicians! Students in preschool through fifth grade will attend a Gospel Magic assembly on Friday to celebrate his feast day!

We encourage you to read the article and watch the video below to learn about this unique saint, and ask your children about the assembly!
