A Message from Our Director:
2020 Member Forum Recap
Last week, IHPI members gathered for our annual member forum at NCRC to review the progress of our Institute community over the last year and consider our course ahead for the next year and beyond.

The day kicked off with a half-day workshop organized by early-career faculty on the theme of culture and team building. This workshop marked the third year for an event that's consistently drawn a capacity turnout of highly engaged IHPI members.

In my State of the Institute presentation in the afternoon, I noted that IHPI now includes 640+ members from 15 U-M schools and colleges in Ann Arbor as well as the Dearborn and Flint campuses, who are leading $1 billion in active health services research funding. I described IHPI's enhanced support services to meet the needs of our growing membership in the areas of data access and analysis, communications, policy engagement, grant development, and more. I also announced new strategic research initiatives we are now forming in telehealth and healthcare workforce diversity.

We celebrated the winners of the annual IHPI Impact Accelerator Awards, including Renu Tipirneni and the Michigan Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network (Michigan OPEN) team led by Chad Brummett, Mike Englesbe, and Jenn Waljee. We also recognized the many IHPI members who generously volunteer their time and expertise across our numerous education and training programs. The forum concluded with a trivia competition among 20+ teams, followed by a reception and poster session featuring the work of students from the HSR Summer Student Fellowship & Internship program.

If we weren't lucky enough to have you at the forum, you can review the slides from my presentation, and check out the Twitter activity at #ihpi20.

I look toward to the new collaborations and discoveries to come in this
new year ---- and decade ---- ahead!

---- John Z. Ayanian, MD, MPP

HIGHLIGHTS

Kao-Ping Chua, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of pediatrics, testified Wednesday before the Health Subcommittee of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee. Chua spoke about a provision that would remove a loophole in the nation's "orphan drug" law. The loophole has limited the availability of different forms of a key drug to treat opioid addiction, Chua said.

Ratings and reviews for nearly everything can be found online these days, including doctors. How are older adults using these ratings in their decisions about choosing doctors? In May 2019, the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging asked a national sample of adults age 50 ---80 about their use and perceptions of online doctor ratings.

In a new paper in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, a pair of University of Michigan researchers that included Renu Tipirneni, M.D., M.Sc., associate professor of internal medicine, looked at data from states that have sought or received federal government permission for Medicaid work requirements, and compared it with data from states that haven't. They found that work requirement states tend to have fewer substance use disorder treatment facilities that offer care for opioid use disorder.

Each year at least 100,000 people die in U.S. hospitals following elective surgery. Major complications that can develop following surgery are a significant cause of these deaths, as well as disability and other serious health conditions. More rapidly identifying and effectively responding to complications after surgery is a major opportunity to improve patient safety and prevent loss of life. Learn more in this brief about what the evidence says about how to improve "rescue."

As a trauma and acute care surgeon, much of my clinical focus is on life-saving interventions. Yet little is known about what happens to patients after they leave the hospital. I'm trying to understand how we can move beyond helping our patients survive and towards helping our patients thrive after their life-changing injury or illness.
