Dear Colleagues:

A few months ago we announced that The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) invited our college and the College of Optometry to be part of a new primary health care clinic -- also known as the Outpatient Care Upper Arlington facility. How excited we were to be included in this new inter-professional effort that is the first of its kind for both our colleges. This collaborative endeavor provides an opportunity for us to demonstrate the importance of our contributions in a "real life" model for health care delivery.

After more than two years of planning, months of meetings, and many strategic decisions, our new community-based dental clinic is ready. With seasoned practitioners, an experienced clinic manager, and a team of well-trained support staff, the operation will welcome its first patients in a couple of weeks.

Although our priority with this initiative is to showcase "what dentistry can do" in a multi-disciplinary clinic setting, we can and will accomplish so much more in this endeavor. Physicians, nurses, therapists, and a host of administrative personnel will interact with the dental team as they jointly care for patients, share progress notes, and learn about each other's respective scopes of practice. Solutions to complex health problems will be readily identified and managed so patients can fully benefit from having us all work together.

Because this clinic will serve as one of our OHIO Project sites, we are also ready for a select group of senior students to experience dentistry in a multi-disciplinary health care environment. They will see first-hand how dental care can be delivered efficiently and effectively in collaboration with their medical colleagues. They will also learn to appreciate the benefits of working as a health care team, and they may consider practicing in similar settings after graduation.

We are pleased that this unique opportunity also creates a new model for recruiting faculty as it allows them to be clinically active in a private practice setting, while simultaneously serving as college faculty. In this case, our faculty will be preceptors in the Outpatient Care Upper Arlington clinic for three days each week, and they will spend the other two days providing pre-clinical and clinic instruction in Postle Hall. For them, it is the best of both worlds.

As the months and years go by, I look forward to reporting great successes that result from this collaboration between our college and the OSUWMC. This project represents a special point in our history on Ohio State's campus, and I predict that it will help define our profession and allow us to fully realize our purpose and contributions to the health care community.
