Director's Letter

Why was GrassrootsHealth founded? Why continue this quest? Daily, we defend our rights to make personal and informed decisions about our health. The task isn't over.

When I happened on a game-changer, vitamin D, back in 2007, I found that research was being done not just on bones, but how vitamin D could prevent disease, including the very disease I had just barely recovered from, breast cancer. What? How could my oncologists and doctors not tell me that? Could my actions today help prevent a woman from going through what I did?

From that day on, I vowed that GrassrootsHealth would make a difference. We created a team, our 48 international scientists that together set the goal. They decided, together, that drastic disease prevention and a healthier population would result if everyone's vitamin D levels could be in the 40-60 ng/ml (100-150 nmol/L) range. Needless to say, we've made lots of progress--but, we're not there yet.

In 2009, when I was touring the country giving talks about vitamin D, many people at the seminars stated, "I believe in vitamin D, but, my doctor won't order a test for me!"  Being a firm believer in individual choice, we launched the D*action project. Dr. Garland helped establish the project as an IRB approved field trial--to provide education and testing about vitamin D. Now more than 10,000 individuals strong, and with a new Omega-3 Index measurement, it has been used to help convince people about our goal - through 10 research papers by GrassrootsHealth alone, and countless more by our scientists.

How to move this into an institutional realm?  Start with the scientists and institution--which had a powerful research result on pregnancy. With the help of Drs Hollis and Wagner, the researchers, and Dr. Roger Newman of the OB Department, a nutrient field trial was launched--to effectively put a new standard of care into place--testing the vitamin D levels of all pregnant women, providing supplementation to help them get to the 40-60 ng/ml range. We will publish a paper on this within this month of June showing phenomenal results!  (Vitamin D works.)

Our latest effort to provide ongoing support for you (and us): We are launching the GrassrootsHealth Wellness Center, a way to provide you quality supplements--at a discount--and, to provide ongoing donations to us, solely with the purchase of the supplements. Please take advantage of this today.

It takes lots of pieces to make change happen and YOU, your health activities and external support are a major part of the process. Thanks so much for your encouragement and commitment.

Onwards!

  Omega-3s Could Lessen Depression

There are over 23,000 published research papers supporting the positive health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. This article will focus on some of the research around brain health, specifically depression. As we continue to support the Omega-3 Index Test we will profile other research about omega-3s. They are a family of fats which, like vitamin D, are important for overall good health and for disease prevention.

Can Vitamin D Improve Autism?

A randomized controlled trial was run in Egypt, by Khaled Saad et al., which tested 109 children with autism (85 boys, 24 girls), ages 3-10. The control group received 300 IU vitamin D daily per kilogram of body weight (maximum of 5000 IU/day), which would be the equivalent of 20,000 IU/day for an 150 lb. adult. The results were astounding!
