Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art (FOFA)
Announces its 5th Contest
for Young Folk Artists,
in collaboration with Museo Estatal de
Arte Popular Oaxaca (MEAPO)

THEME:
MOSTRANDO LA FUERZA DE MI PUEBLO
SHOWING THE STRENGTH OF MY PEOPLE

We are excited to let you know that our fifth young folk artist competition will take place in Oaxaca in August! FOFA - in collaboration with MEAPO - can undertake this project thanks to the generosity of many loyal individual donors and Los Amigos del Arte Popular (LADAP).

Preparations for the competition are underway now, beginning with a campaign to announce the contest's theme, conditions and judging criteria. The submission of entries, judging, and award ceremony will occur in August. FOFA will produce a collectors-quality exhibition catalogue in the fall, and the exhibition inauguration and catalogue presentation will occur on December 8 in Oaxaca.

We believe that our competitions for young Oaxacans (ages 30 and under) are an effective tool to strengthen their identity as artists and stewards of ancestral techniques and designs. FOFA's competition in 2016 brought forward 106 artesanos who submitted works in five categories (textiles, ceramics, wood carving, painting of carved wood, and "other modalities").

A number of the 60 artists who were recognized as winners and honorable mentions previously had been unknown outside of their pueblos, and their accomplishments in the competition, together with the opportunities that FOFA and our collaborators in Oaxaca subsequently provided, has brought valuable attention to their work and artistic potential. We will be in touch with more details soon!
