Vista del Lago student selected as overall winner of Congressional App Challenge
Vista del Lago senior Kim Pham, who participated in the Congressional App Challenge for middle and high school students, was selected the overall winner for our congressional district!

Congressman Ami Bera's team came to Vista to personally present the award to Kim.

The Congressional App Challenge is a competition for building applications, either web or mobile based, and one winner is selected from each participating congressional district. Kim's application won in our congressional district by a unanimous vote from the judges.

She created an app that is similar to a social media platform in order to facilitate the reuse of school supplies, and it also calculates the carbon footprint of a students' activities. The prize includes having her work displayed at the U.S. Capitol Building and money towards a plane ticket to the Capitol.

Please join us in celebrating Kim and her amazing success!

Dreams for a Youth Center in Rancho Cordova will be a reality thanks to generous community donation
2020 is off to a rousing start with one of the most significant, joint-collaborations of organizations in Rancho Cordova history. The dream of a new Youth Center will become a reality, thanks to a partnership between the city of Rancho Cordova, Center of Praise Church, Rancho Cordova Police Department, SMUD and the Rancho Cordova Police Activities League program. Ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony took place Monday morning, Jan. 20.
The new media was out to capture the moment. View a news clip here.

You can also see moments of the day on our Twitter posts here and here , plus a gallery of photos on our Facebook page.

The Youth Center will be located on Investment Circle. A 9,000-square-foot building which sits on nearly two acres of land is owned by the Center of Praise church. The church walked away from a cash offer for the property and instead gifted the city a free 25 year lease with option to renew for an additional 25 years.

The city is investing $1 million towards renovations, and RCPD PAL will stay involved to help coordinate youth activities. Center of Praise Bishop Parnell Lovelace, was handed the keys to the city by Rancho Cordova Mayor David Sander. Hearts and smiles were big as law enforcement, community members, church members, FCUSD staff and students, and city officials gathered to a packed room, to talk about the vision of a place for youth to access services and activities in a safe and welcoming space.

School Resource Officer Tracey Jacobs named RCPD Employee of the Year
Join us in congratulating Rancho Cordova PD 's School Resource Officer Tracey Jacobs, who was just named RCPD employee of the year! Jacobs learned during a public announcement at the Jan. 21 City of Rancho Cordova Government City Council meeting of the award. This was a surprise devised by her law enforcement colleagues and Chief of Police, Chris Pittman, who were on hand to honor and congratulate her.
In his announcement, Chief Pittman, described Jacobs as "extremely humble and very dedicated to the community." Her supervisor, Sergeant Rich Merideth called her "our Rancho Cordova rockstar" who is "passionate about the youth she terms all her kids." "In 20 years, I've never seen someone do the job with the passion she has," Meredith went on to say. "I've never seen kids so happy to go to school!" as he described what a morning on the corner of Chase and Coloma looks like; Jacobs personally greeting students arriving to school with elaborate, personalized handshakes and warm smiles.
Jacobs' dedication to positive school climate, making caring connections with students, and commitment to keeping our community safe are exceptional. We are proud to work with Officer Jacobs, and excited she has earned this honor.
