A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JAY

We celebrated Purim this past Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.   Most of us probably recall Purim from our childhood. We remember a crowded synagogue with groggers (those infernal noise makers), Hamantaschen (the triangular cookie filled with prune, apricot, or poppy seeds), and gift bags filled with candy or other treats. We also may recall the over-simplified story of Purim; we remember mean Queen Vashti, Beautiful Esther, and heroic Mordechai who refused to bow down the evil Haman (Boooo!)

Here is the basic summary:

  • King Ahasuerus dethrones Queen Vashti.
  • Esther is crowned queen after winning a beauty contest.
  • Mordecai uncovers a plot to kill the king and reports it.
  • [King Ahasuerus promotes Haman, making him more powerful than all the other officials.]
  • Mordecai refuses to bow before Haman [a close confidant of the king].
  • Haman seeks to destroy the Jews after his run-in with Mordecai.
  • Mordecai appeals to Esther to save her people. Esther approaches King Ahasuerus and invites him and Haman to a banquet.
  • Mordecai is honored for having saved the king's life. Esther entertains the king and Haman, and invites them to a second banquet.
  • Esther pleads for her people at the second banquet. She accuses Haman.
  • The king grants Esther's request and condemns Haman to die on the gallows that he built for the Jews.
  • The Jews defend themselves throughout Persia [against those following out the decree to destroy the Jews].
  • The holiday of Purim is established and Mordecai advances to a position of importance.
It is interesting enough, but I have some news for you. The Purim story, if we read it cover to cover now with our adult eyes, is more like a Shakespeare comedy/history than a children's story. The summary above is correct, but in the full story there is drama, humor, political intrigue, murder, sex, and more.   The JCC's Torah study class spent last Saturday morning discussing some of the Megillah's interesting issues. We concluded that it really could be made into quite a good movie. Does anyone have a connection to Steven Spielberg?

At any rate, next year I think it will be a good idea to devote a few classes to an in depth study of the Megillah.

This year at our Wednesday evening Purim services we had a number of congregants enjoying pizza, salad, latkes, and Hamantaschen and really taking the whole noisemaking thing a bit too seriously. The Rabbi still has a headache J. Aaron Lombardi chanted, as we say, "The Whole Megillah". A good time was had by all!

On Thursday morning, a special guest joined us, Father John Frambes from St. Francis. I chanted the Megillah and enjoyed listening to those gathered revel in their ability to drown our Haman's name. As you will see from the pictures, the theme of this year's Purim was the moustache.

And important scheduling note: Purim 2019 will be on Wednesday evening, March 20th and Thursday morning, March 21. Mark your calendars now and start to think of all of the fun things the JCC can do. Chag Purim Sameach.

FROM SUNDAY, MARCH 4th UNTIL TUESDAY, MARCH 6th, I WILL BE AT THE AIPAC POLICY CONFERENCE IN WASHINGTON. IF YOU WILL BE THERE , PLEASE EMAIL ME AT [email protected] OR TEXT/CALL ME AT 973-865-9534 SO THAT WE CAN ARRANGE TO MEET TAKE A JCC OF LBI PICTURE.

Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

T RAVEL TO ISRAEL WITH THE JCC OF LBI

The itinerary will take us from Tel Aviv to the Golan Heights, to a winery, to the Kineret, to a Kibbutz, to Sefad, to Jerusalem, to the Dead Sea, to Massada, to many museums, and more. The JCC's first trip to Israel will take place October 7-18, 2018. The itinerary will take us from Tel Aviv to the Golan Heights, to a winery, to the Kineret, to a Kibbutz, to Sefad, to Jerusalem, to the Dead Sea, to Masada, to many museums, and more. At Masada we will be sharing in a bat mitzvah of one of our fellow travelers.

We will be immersed in Israeli history and culture and, at the same time, we will get to better know our selves, and each other.

So far an extraordinarily nice group of people have chosen to travel with us.

This trip that has been designed both for the person who has never been to Israel, and for the person who has visited frequently.  Come be a part of what is sure to be a trip of a lifetime.

In addition to a set itinerary, we will have some evenings where we will be free to explore on our own.  We will be provided with information on concerts or cultural events in the places where we will be.

The tour is officially flying El Al; however, if you want to fly United, ITC can help you to make arrangements.

SHABBAT SHALOM

Shabbat

Candle Lighting Time
Friday
March 2, 2018
5:32 PM
(So. Ocean County NJ)

HERE IS A CALENDAR OF ALL CANDLE LIGHTING TIMES
ON LBI FOR 5778

SERVICES ARE CANCELLED THIS SHABBAT DUE TO THE FORECAST OF HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG WINDS

Inasmuch as we will not be having services this week, permit me to make a few suggestions.

First you should know that when I do not join you for services, Torah study, and Schmoozing, my week is incomplete.

Shabbat is partly about decompressing from the rigors of the week.

Shabbat Dinner
First, say a blessing over wine and a blessing over Challah. (If you don't know the blessings, make a blessing of your own and, after Shabbat, reach out to me and I will send you the blessings and how to say them).

Set aside time to meditate over the past week; consider what went well and did not go so well.  Consider how you might have changed things for the better; and then consider your hopes for the week to come.

Let the members of your household know that you love them and that your life is better because of them.  Let them know that you are
there for them.

Consider the wonders of the world around you, both God-made and man-made.
Be present to your world.  Consider how lucky we are to be living at this time and in this place.

At meals, don't just eat your food, savor your it.  Recognize the blessing of being able to sit and relax.

Consider what you might do, in the week to come, to make the world a better place.

Shabbat Shalom
Rabbi Jay
