Formed through a partnership between Marshfield Clinic and several community coalitions in 1995, Northwoods Coalition is the largest and oldest coalition dedicated to substance abuse prevention in Wisconsin. Representatives from coalitions in a 35-county region, including all 11 of Wisconsin Tribal Nations, serve on a non-governing advisory board to help shape policies, practices and programs which address public health issues arising from use of alcohol and other drugs. Since 2007, through a contract with Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Marshfield Clinic has served as the Northwestern Regional Prevention Center for the Alliance for Wisconsin Youth. The purpose of the Alliance for Wisconsin Youth is to enhance and support the capacity of coalitions in substance abuse prevention and youth development.

The Food and Drug Administration intensified its warnings about kratom, saying new research provides strong evidence that the unregulated botanical substance has "opioid properties" and is associated with 44 deaths.
Researchers found that among young males, non-medical use of prescription drugs was connected to dating violence. Among females, the non-medical use of prescription drugs was connected more often with the physical form of dating violence.
Neuroscientists now have a better idea of what is going on inside the brain when we revisit terrifying experiences. This new research could inspire better treatments for those with conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The Executive Office of the President, Office of National Drug Control Policy and the Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention are accepting applications for fiscal year 2018 DFC Support Program grants.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services, is accepting applications for fiscal year 2018 Law Enforcement and Behavioral Health Partnerships for Early Diversion grants. The purpose of this program is to establish or expand programs that divert adults with a serious mental illness or a co-occurring disorder from the criminal justice system to community-based services prior to arrest and booking. Special consideration will be given to applicants proposing to use grant funding to support early diversion services for veterans.

The purpose of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Minority AIDS Initiative: Service Integration program is to integrate evidence-based, culturally competent mental and substance use disorder treatment with HIV primary care and prevention services. The population of focus is individuals with a serious mental illness (SMI) or co-occurring disorder (COD) living with or at risk for HIV and/or hepatitis in at-risk populations, including racial and ethnic minority communities. The goal is to reduce the incidence of HIV and improve the overall health outcomes for individuals with SMI or COD.

Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, Inc. is recruiting a Program Director. The Program Director plans and coordinates all Strategic Prevention Framework activities for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's State Prevention Enhancement Planning Grant. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration published the Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 63, Medications for Opioid Use Disorder. TIP 63 reviews the use of the three Food and Drug Administration-approved medications to treat opioid use disorders: methadone, naltrexone, and buprenorphine. This TIP provides guidance for healthcare professionals and addiction treatment providers on appropriate prescribing practices for these medications and effective strategies for supporting the patients utilizing medication for the treatment of an opioid use disorder.

7th WI Department of Justice/15th National Drug Enforcement Administration Prescription Drug Take-Back Event
Participating law enforcement agencies can host one or more collection sites at locations and times of their choosing. Law Enforcement agencies offering a permanent drug drop box can also turn over collected drugs to DOJ for proper disposal. Boxes for disposal will be provided by the DEA. Law enforcement can register here:
